Missing Frances

William Lunn, according to Uttoxeter censuses , was born c1822 in nearby Abbots Bromley. I’ve been unable to find a baptism record, so no proof of father or mother. I think his mother was Frances Lunn, a spinster who married a widower, John Wood, a tailor in Uttoxeter, in 1823. I have concluded that William Wood, living with Frances and John in 1841, is William Lunn as I have been unable to find further records of William Wood, but William Lunn appears later as a master tailor.
In 1844 William Lunn married Sarah Aston, in Derby, though both came from Uttoxeter. On the marriage certificate, he claims his father was a surgeon called Charles (presumably not Lunn, as Frances was described as a spinster in 1823). As I have scant information about his father, I have tried to find out more about his mother, the elusive Frances. From the 1841 census, it would seem that she was born in Staffordshire c 1802/3. She died in 1849, so no clarification re her precise birth place. Her age at death is given as 53, indicating her birth to have been in 1795/6. I have trawled through Staffordshire baptism records 1790 -1805 – no Frances Lunns or variants, so I tried just Frances then went cross-eyed, trying to eliminate likely suspects through Staffordshire marriage/death records – failed to find any convincing individual.
This week, I decided to look for Frances Lunns born anywhere at around the right time and found one born in 1796 in Netherseal, Derbyshire , just 20 miles from Uttoxeter/16miles from Abbots Bromley. No father, mother’s name was Mary (it seems she had already had two other daughters without a father being identified).

How likely is it that she is my missing Frances?

Edward Le Bihan - bc1841 France d1921 Granville NSW - looking for info

Can anybody help with filling in some detail on this gentleman. He was an artist (as was his father) and went to Australia but I am struggling to find him leaving the UK or arriving in Australia - he is mentioned as going to Australia early in a Chancery court paper looking to pay out money to him from his mother's account. I found his death on Austlit website.

I'd like to know whether he married and had any children - I think he probably did as there is a Francis H E Le Bihan/Lebihan showing a marriage on FMP & I'm guessing there are not many Le Bihans to the dollar in Australia. Also if there are any links to any of his artistic works - google not showing anything.

Thanks in advance for any help anybody can give.

Newspaper reports of a death

Joseph Dickenson (my Gt Grandfather) was a railway clerk & lay preacher for Primitive Methodist.Born Chorley 1854 he died West Derby in 1879 age 25yrs.I am looking for any newspaper reports of his death.
At the time he left a widow Mary Ellen & 2 children Alexander b.1876 & Margaret Amelia b.1878.
Someone quite sometime ago informed me that he was buried in Anfield Cemetery,Liverpool.
Dying so young I wonder if his death was an accident which may have been reported in the newspapers.I am unable for various reasons to get the death cert.

Gladys Maynard & Amelia Passmore

Hi all,

I am trying to find out who a couple of spouses on my family tree were, and so far no luck. I've managed to find one's DOB using the 1939 register, but I still can't find out who she'd have been born as.

1) Gladys MAYNARD

Born 22/06/1891 according to the 1939 Register. Married George HALE in Ottershaw 18/10/1913. Died Oct-Nov-Dec 1961. On their marriage certificate her father's surname is simply given as 'Maynard' but there's a blank space where the forename would go. George died in 1963.

2) Amelia PASSMORE

Born ~1919/20 according to her obituary, as she died aged 91 on 17/10/2010. Married Herbert Edward HALE in Ottershaw Jul-Aug-Sep 1940. Amelia is not yet viewable on the 1939 Register. Herbert died in 1970.

Any ideas where, when and under what names these two women were born? Logically they would be Surrey-born, but it's possible they were born abroad or simply used false names. Obviously I've considered that they didn't marry using their maiden names, but I still can't find anything suitable.

Robert Rees

Does anyone have good access to WW1 Army Service Records?. Robert Rees would have been my uncle, he was born in 1905 in Walworth, Surrey. In 1915, according to Ancestry Records, he enlisted in The King's Royal Rifles. After the War, his father, Isaac Rees was given both his British War Medal, and the Victory Medal, in 1921. This suggests that he did not survive the War, but the Ancestry Record, only shows part of his service record, and shows a torn page with vital information missing.

Any info would be welcome.

Privatising all notes with a single click before exporting to gedcom

mercredi 23 décembre 2015

I want to put my tree on My Heritage without the notes. It is currently in Family Treemaker 14. It includes 8,500 people and is the result of 16 years research. In the last month I have discovered that the only way to make notes private in Family Treemaker and Family Tree Builder is to individually lock them. This would mean doing it 8,500 times every time I wanted to update the web tree.

Is there any software that can privatize all notes with one click?

Previously I have managed to do this in Family Treemaker before converting to gedcom and then using a program called HTML pedigree to transfer the gedcom to an HTML tree. (This software has long since been overtaken by new browsers which is why I’ve had to dismantle my site and look for an alternative).

Should be grateful for practical suggestions!

Will there be any free access this holiday season?

Hi

I am out of practice with family tree stuff and have not been able to devote much time to it recently. I remember in previous years Ancestry and/or Find My Past have run days with free access over holiday periods.

Does anyone know if anything similar is happening this holidays?

Thanks in advance

What is the difference between a Gentleman and an Esquire?

I have found my 4xGt Grandfather in a poll book from 1774 in Westminster and I'm pondering what the difference is in "status" between the entry definitions of one man being described as a Gentleman and the another as an Esquire. I thought the monicker Esquire was given to a man who attended Oxford or Cambridge University?

Marriage, Coleraine 1889

Helping a friend research her tree, we find ourselves in Coleraine Registration District with the marriage of Samuel Law and Matilda Campbell in 1889. Samuel and Matilda had a son called Campbell, who was my friend's grandfather. She "knew" that Campbell was named after his mother's maiden name, and believes that Matilda was Scottish.

Until I started helping her I knew absolutely nothing about Irish records, and now only really know that the 1911 and 1901 censuses are on-line, but virtually every census before that was lost to fire during the 1920 uprising. We have the family on the 1911 and 1901 census records and, helpfully, in 1901 Samuel's father William was with them, so that neatly takes us back another generation. I've searched Ancestry, FMP and FS, but not been able to find any more info.

So, if she decided to buy Samuel and Matilda's marriage certificate (a) where do we buy it from (i.e. weblink), (b) how much would it cost and (c) what information would it contain, please? And, where else could I look for info?

Thanks

Woodhouse of Bretforton and Salwarpe, Worcestershire - 16th Century

lundi 21 décembre 2015

Default Woodhouse of Bretforton and Salwarpe
(Note, it is a good idea, when reading through parish registers transcripts, to see if there is any other information after the transcripts.)

I have been tracing my Woodhouse family of Salwarpe for some years now.

The earliest probable Woodhouse ancestor was William Woodhouse and his wife Katherine; his widow was mentioned in a document dating to around 1538 to 1544 and was mentioned in the 1560 will of her grandson Hugh Woodhouse.

Their son was Richard Woodhouse whose will dated to 1554. His eldest son was William. Other common family names included Alice and Katherine.

On to the Bretforton connection

I was looking through my Bretforton transcripts today, when I discovered a whole lot more information than I expected.

One was the transcript of the will of John Woodhouse, vicar of Bretforton, dated to 1530, and I immediately noticed he left a legacy to the church at Salwarpe. In his will he mentions his brother Richard's eldest son, his sister Joan, wife of Thomas Charlott, his sister Margaret, wife of William Ewens, his sister Alice, wife of ? Tandy, other brothers and sisters, and his parents, both unnamed.

The PDF also included family trees of these people but, alas, no name for the parents of John, Richard, Joan, Margaret, and Alice.

The timing looks right for this John to be the brother of Richard Woodhouse.

Other than checking for the wills of the near relatives , and I already know that they left some, can anyone think of anything else I can do to try and prove the connection (if any) between John and Richard?

(Note 2: I am really hating Henry VIII right now. In John's will he asked to be buried at Evesham, Abbey, and Henry VIII destroyed it 10 years later)

Newbie here with iMac

Hello, this is Dave, a new member and I have had an iMac for 1 1/2 years. I have used Family Tree Maker for the Mac. I converted my family tree from PC almost as soon after I bought my iMac. My iMac shut down and I lost all data including my Family Tree Maker files. Luckily, I was eventually able to download the synced version from Ancestry. I am curious about what problems, if any, the members of this forum have had using the Apple/Mac computers. I have so many other questions regarding Ancestry's announcement of abandoning Family Tree Maker. But first things first. Thanks so much for allowing me to access this site.

250+ Wylie family photos - Killycowan/Ballymena

samedi 19 décembre 2015

Hi all,

A second cousin of my mother's recently sent me a CD with 250+ digital photos of various Wylie family members. Most of these photos were taken in the Killycowan and Ballymena areas of Antrim, Northern Ireland in the early part of the 20th century.

Sadly, with the exception of a single photograph of my great-grandfather and his siblings, I cannot verify who is on any of them, but they are beautiful photographs taken of everyday family life in rural Antrim, and I would very much like to find someone who recognizes old relatives on them.

I'm not going to upload the entire collection online, but I will post a couple of examples here, and if anyone has family from that neck of the woods and recognizes the Wylie name, please do let me know.

I do hope to find another home for them, as they are fantastic photos but sadly will remain unidentified for now.

LDS family history centers

So I'm planning a new project for next year - try to organise the online records for the Tackaberry's of Pillaton, Cornwall into family groups and see how far forward and backwards in time I can get. Also hoping to try and workout when the name moved to Ireland

A lot of these records are either on the Cornwall OPC site (excellent resource for anyone with connections to Cornwall) or on the FamilySearch site. There is a LDS Family History Center in Plymouth I could visit to look at their records but I was wondering what addtional details would be available from the records at the center that is not already published online. Are the online records just an abstract of the availbale info at the centre.

Woul welcome your thoughts on if the centers are worth visiting and what addtional info you have gleened from them.

And does anyone have any family info relating to Pillaton, cornwall from about 1550 - 1750 they care to share.

Thanks

'New improved Ancestry'

I seem to have had this foisted on me. I've tried it, don't like it - not at all relaxing/satisfying to use - but can't find how to get back to the 'proper Ancestry'. Am I doomed to be forcibly improved?

Judith
'New improved Ancestry'

Where do i begin?

Absolutely gutted, wrote this yesterday and forgot to post before I closed down my computer!!:p

My 5x great grandparents Thomas Lakin (spelt Layking on the marriage cert) and Jane Urry married in 1825 in Portsmouth. He is listed as batchelor and she is a spinster. He also has RMA after his name which I presume is Royal Marine Atillery and explains why he goes from Staffordshire to Portsmouth, however I cant find any reference to his records or enlistment. Jane is listed as "of this parish" and I cant read the witness signatures

My 4x great grandmother Mary Lakin was born in 1822 also in Portsmouth (as per census' from 1851 onwards), however I am unable to find any baptism for a Lakin or Urry in Hampshire around that time.

In 1841 Jane is listed as being 30 and born out of the county of Staffordshire and Mary is 15 and born out of county also. So if the 1841 is to be believed, Jane was born in 1811 and Mary born in 1826 (fits nicely with the marriage!). The next child was born in 1828

If 1811 is the true DOB then that would have made her 14 when she married and 11 when she had Mary, however when she dies in 1849 her age is listed as 40 giving her DOB of 1809 and again only 16 when she married.

I have found a few baptisms in 1809 in Godshill on IOW for a Jane Urry, and I have searched for anything happening in St Thomas' where they got married to see if any other Urry's had occasions happened there and found nothing.

So I have no idea who is the true parent of Mary, was she from both parents or just one?

Is there anything I can look for that might narrow down who Mary and Jane were?

There aren't any children who have specific names that would match the parents of any of the Jane Urry baptisms
Where do i begin?

Fascinating Family Story from Killymard, Donegal

A cousin clued me in a while ago to information about Killymard, Donegal. There are census records that survived in a minister's house. They were transcribed in a book, described here (bottom half of page):
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb....al/mgraham.htm

and much has been transcribed here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb....lymardproj.htm (go to the individual censuses and click).

I was able to obtain a copy of the book. In the 1851 census, the Ritchie family is described (BTW, notes were also added, so this is more than just the census record)

Ritchie. John 38 Ann Mackey 37 married 1831 Fanny 18 Hugh 16 [died] Tom 13 [Hugh's father] Margaret 11 Jane 8 [married Ken, died in Glasgow] Ann died 1843 aged 80. Margaret married Adam Mackie. +Died on day of her husband's funeral. John died on day of wife's funeral. Charles murdered for his master. Buried in Convoy, near Whiterock. His ghost appeared to Mary Anne on the same day. Tom and John Ritchie are brothers.

Wow. Don't you wish you could have that kind of information for your missing tree members?

.... I'm wondering if the entry underneath Joseph 1's baptism, is actually his burial. But then I may be clutching at straws because I can't find a death for Joseph 1 before Joseph 2 is baptised.

Any ideas, anyone, please?

Thanks
STG

Edited to say: I have no reason to think that there's more than one set of Richard/Sarah Hastily/Hastelow (etc) parents baptising their children in the village at that time.

Having been a member for many years all of a sudden I find that I am not able to LOG IN. This only appears to have happened since the TT saga but maybe it is something that I have done. Of course I have now managed but it was long winded.

A friend typed a letter on my laptop a while ago and maybe they touched something. How can I remain Logged In please? ( I have about three sites that have this problem).

Thomas Alma Louis King B. 1892

Thomas Alma Louis king B. 1892

I wonder if anyone could help me please?

I’m currently trying to help a lady with her family tree, and she is particularly keen to try and identify what happened to her maternal grandfather, Thomas Alma Louis King. Thomas was born in Peckham, London, in 1892, and later fought in the First World War.

In 1920 he sailed on the SS Grampian from Southampton to Quebec, arriving on 10th October. On the ocean arrival form Thomas identified the reason for moving to Canada as joining his cousins, one of whom was Charles Edward King of 205 Twentieth East Street, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

Amongst his military records there is a 1921 communication from the War Department in London, to Thomas, addressed to him at the Municipal Hospital, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada. Thomas was a fitter (engineer), and I believe it possible that he may have been employed at the hospital; the alternative being that he was a fairly long-term patient.

Unfortunately, after that, we've not been able to find any other mention of Thomas.

Any information would be very gratefully received.

Best wishes

Paul Gardner

High CPU usage

jeudi 10 décembre 2015

My Windows 7 laptop is running slow and shows CPU usage of 100% most of the time - even if I'm not doing anything it still shows 80-90%.

I've run a scan (MS Essentials) and a disk cleanup which haven't made any difference.

Can anyone suggest anything else I can try?

John Suter b1814

I am having difficulty in tracing the maiden name of John Suter's wife also their marriage and any children that they may have had. I have been searching on FMP and Family Search but the only record that I can find is on the 1861 Census, where the name Suter is spealt Sueter.

The only information I have so far is.

John Suter b1814 at Catherington Hampshire
His wife is Jane in the 1861 Census
His Occupation is a Grocer
Jane's Occupation is Grocer's wife

John's Father is named Edward and his Mother Frances.
I would be most grateful for any information or any tips in locating the information.

Kind Regards

J*** B******** Dolphin

I cannot find the birth record of my cousin John Bannister Dolphin

His parents were William Edward James Dolphin who was born in Gosport in1902, and his mother was Ethel Violet Dolphin nee Bannister who was born in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire in1894. They married in 1928 in Croydon.

William was in the Royal Navy so wasn't at home much. Ethel Violet died in 1939 and is buried in Elmers End, Beckenham ( I have the official internment card listing grave number)

ci934 they had a son * * Dolphin, who was about 2 years older than me, but I can find no record for him. I know that at a later date William retired from the Royal Navy and settled in Gibralter.

I have found a record of a Master J*** Dolphin aged 13, sailing on the ss Staffordshire from Liverpool to Gibraltar on 29th July 1948, and it gives the last UK address as The Manor House, Bradninch, Exeter, Devon. If this is him I cannot find a link on how he would be in Devon, or who with. He was still a schoolboy, and would have had to have been taken in by someone following his mothers death.

Any clues would be appreciated

Arthur

Sorry Arthur, but until we can find a likely death for him I am afraid I have had to remove his name. If he was born around 1934 he could still be alive and our T&C's don't allow the names to be posted of anyone who may be living.

I have recently changed to Firefox and apart from trying to save things to my pics etc (where on earth do they go I ask myself) I am very happy with it.

Today I have just had an alert onscreen from Mozerello ?Morzillo (something to do with Firefox anyway) telling me that my Adobe plugin has crashed. Is it important. I can't see any plugs externally on the computer so must be an internal thingy:

a) does anyone know what it is - I would be interested to know.
b) what do I have to do to re-attach it.

I know this sounds really stupid but I am really stupid when it comes to computers - they either work or they don't - I have learned the hard way never to fiddle with them - it all goes wrong when I start to try and fix things. Sue

Wilhelm Wege, German, help with birth place

mercredi 2 décembre 2015

Hi everyone!
I'm sorry if it's the wrong place to ask for help.

I'm trying to find where my great grandfather was born in Germany so I can order his birth certificate and send it to the German Consulate.
I tried talking to my family but unfortunately, all I got is written below.

Wilhelm Wege (My great grandfather)
Arrived in Brazil on 04-november-1920 with his father, stepmother, brothers and sisters. He was 15 years old. The ship was called Sofia, and came from Trieste.
His name is written as Wilchelm in the ship passengers list. (I think it is a typo).
His name was changed to Guilherme Wege in Brazil (the same way it could have been to William if he went to the US)
Guilherme Wege can be found on familysearch easily, and they even have a Brazilian document from where I got his birth date! Unfortunately, there are no information of where he was born, it just says he is from Germany.

Mother: Johanna Wilhelmina Elisabeth Wege
Passed away before they came to Brazil.

Father: Karl Wege
Arrived in Brazil on 04-november-1920 with Emma, his new wife, and with his sons and daughters. He was 50 years old at that time.

I tried everything I can think of, slightly changing their names and surnames when searching.
Familysearch, ancestry, rootsweb, lots of German websites (I don't read German, so it's reeeally hard).
A website suggested splitting the search, for example, first look for Prussian, then Bavarian, then Baden and so on. Still nothing.

Unfortunately my grandfather passed away a few years ago, and nobody knows of any document of my great grandfather.

Please, if you have any suggestions, just let me know.

Thanks!

What's your name, Mary Jane?

Would love some help with Mary Jane, please, if possible?

When she married Thomas Pilkington at Darley, Derbys on 1 May 1862, she gave her name as Mary Jane Mitchell Elliot, d/o David Elliot.

Looking at the census records, her year of birth age doesn't vary, always showing as 1844/45, but her place of birth does vary, although it's always somewhere in Derbyshire:

1851 = Asbourne (meant to be Ashbourne, possibly?) - the family are in Wath on Dearne
1861 = Cumton (can't find any such place in Derbyshire) - the family are in Matlock
1871 = Matlock - married now, living in Darley
1881 = Matlock - married, living in Darley
1891 = Ashbourne - married, living in Darley
1901 = Ashbourne - married, living in Darley
1911 = Ashbourne - married, living in Darley

From the 1851 and 1861 census records, her parents are shown as David Elliot* and wife Caroline, however I can't find a marriage for David and Caroline. The second child I know about (from the 1851 census records) was Robert Elliot b. Clown(e) in 1848.

* David's given place of birth varies between France, Belgium and Enniskillen !

I can't find a likely birth registration for a Mary Jane (+/- Mitchell) Elliot between 1843-45, but there is a Mary Jane Mitchell registered in Worksop RegDist Q3 1844. This makes me think that Mary Jane wasn't David's daughter, but was Caroline's before she and David married (assuming that they did marry, that is).

So, boiling it down .....

1. Can anyone find a more likely birth for Mary Jane?
and
2. Can anyone find a marriage for David and Caroline?

Hope this makes some sort of sense.

Thanks

Prerogative Court, class Testimentary

I have found the following information on FMP. It is from the Record Office of Ireland 1849.Class Testamentary.
Testators name; Charles Ryan 25 Jan 1849.
What is the significance of the date? This is followed by his residence and Esq. The others have widow, spinster etc. Is this because he had greater social standing?
Year of Probate is 1849 and then there is a number; 187 followed by P or I. What is the significance?
Is all this saying that he actually wrote a will?
Thank you in advance,

John Suter Marriages

I will try not to bore you with my query but this is the best way that I can explain it.

My ancestor John Suter was b1754 in Buriton and died 1821 also in Buriton Hampshire, he married Hannah Windebank March 1778 in Froxfield Hannah was pregnant when they married and died 6 months later Sept 1778, 3 months after giving birth to William their son. I am sure that John would have re-married being the age that he was but to whom?. I have been in touch with the Hampshire Records Office but sadly could not help me.
If someone has any information or can point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

1939 Register

I know some of you have managed to open records so you might be able to answer this one for me.

I recently purchased 240 credits from FMP to check out family members on the above register. They are valid until 17 Feb 2016. When I click on 'update the record' so that I can ask them to open a closed record I don't get the option to request FMP, only to ask TNA. I still have credits available but do I have to have a proper 'subscription'? I did e-mail FMP but their response was not very clear.

I also asked them if the Register included people in the forces as I have not been able to find him (my father joined the RAF in May 1939 and survived the war for many years). Their response did not answer this query but gave me a link to those who died in the Boer War etc!

Any help would be appreciated

ROOTSIRELAND.ie

Hi all,

Have any of you ever used https://rootsireland.ie ?

It costs £18 for a month's subscription, or you can pay more (but less in the long run) for 6 or 12 month subscriptions. Are their records any good? Have you been able to find the sort of things you want?

For example, I would want pre-1860 birth/baptism records for a few people, but there are probably more cost-effective ways of getting those.

I've only used GRONI and Ancestry for Irish genealogy, so I'm keen to learn more about alternative sources of information.
ROOTSIRELAND.ie

Elizabeth Handcock b c 1845 Lanlivery Cornwall

This is the entry as transcribed on Free Cen for this person in 1861. It is in italics, suggesting some uncertainty on the part of the transcriber. She is in the household of Atwell Cowling, b c 1819, living in Lanlivery. She is described as "daughter in law" (,probably step daughter).

Atwell is shown as living with his "wife", Mary Ann, who he did not marry until 1864. She was formerly known as Ladbrook.

Can someone please check the original record for this entry. It would make perfect sense if the girl's name was Ladbrook.

Baptism Entries Help Pleae

Hi. Can anyone give me some guidance on what may have led to this. I have a Page of entries from Brook Street Baptist Chapel Derby, 1789-1808. All of the entries are by the same Minister and all in the format " Alice Daughter of John and Alice Holmes " ; for example, with the exception of the two I am interested in which are stated as " Ann Bradbury Daughter of William and Ann Robinson" and "Elizabeth Bradbury Daughter of William and Ann Robinson" the entries are two years apart with " Normal" entries between them.
My query is what possible circumstances may have led to the entries in this format. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Help with Ancestry tree again please

lundi 23 novembre 2015

I am on a learning curve having uploaded a tree to Ancestry and doing pretty well on the whole.

I have made a problem for myself today though! .......
Because I uploaded a complete tree and then added some census events I have been getting two census events in the timeline for the same census. Until today I have been able to click 'remove' on one of them. BUT, trying to be clever I clicked on the little page which comes up to ask 'are you are sure'. I did 'click to disable this page' thinking it would allow me to do the removal without an extra click. Sadly that is not the case and now I can't remove any events at all. It just refuses to respond. Drat, that'll teach me not to be too clever.

Anyone got an answer to my problem please, pretty please???

EDIT to say .... I did it. I just had to sign in again and it was back to normal! Phew!

John Robertson Hendry: possible brick wall - how to proceed?

vendredi 20 novembre 2015

Hi all,

I've been managing to piece together two of my mother's family trees over the past few months, and thanks in no small part to the fantastic effort demonstrated by a few people from this forum among others.

However, I have hit a possible brick wall and simply don't know how to proceed, as I've so far been unable to track down any relatives who may be able to help me with names and dates, and I can't find any information on publicly upload family trees.

I am attempting to trace the descendants of one of my great-grandmother's brothers, John Robertson Hendry. I have birth, marriage and death certificates for John from ScotlandsPeople, and I have a likely date of death for his widow, who I do not believe re-married. There's also a probate entry for John on Ancestry (the Scottish will & probate records went up only a week or two ago) which gives his address and the name of his widow.

However, I am not completely sure what his children were called and so, given that they will have been born in Scotland, I am having great difficulty in moving forward. Yes, SP does have its advantages in the form of 5 credit certificates, but in my experience attempting to trace births without knowing the exact details is essentially impossible. :(

On my notes (written some twenty years ago) I have John's children as being: 'Sam Hendry, Anna Hendry in Sheffield.' Just as written, so I don't know if these are both his children or whether Sam married Anna. I can't even be sure the names are correct, though I'll assume they are. Presumably one or both of them moved to Sheffield at some point as they won't have been born in Sheffield, and yet I can't find a record of an Anna Hendry being born in Scotland.

John was born in 1885 and died in 1921; he married in 1915 and so logically any children will have been born between 1915 and 1921. There are two or three Samuel Hendrys born in Glasgow between those dates, but there are no certificates available to view and I don't really want to spend £12 a pop to find out.

What do you all think? Ideally I don't want to have to wait until the 1921 census. :D

Daniel Dolphin

I have hit the proverbial wall with my Great, Great, Great Grandfather. Perhaps someone can confirm whether the information I have been given could be correct.

Daniel Dolphin married Mary Gray, by special licence, at St George's Church, Bloomsbury, London on 6th September 1829. Going by later census information, his birth would have been c1801, he died in Emsworth, Hampshire(West Sussex) in May 1873. All that is fact. But finding his birth, or parents is a different matter.

A relative of mine in New Zealand also looked to find earlier relations, but could only suggest that he was probably born in the Parish of St. Luke's, Old Street, Middlesex. I have tried contacting each of the churches, only to be told that all the records of the time were transferred to the London Archives. The London Archives said that because of the location, these would have been transferred to the Metropolitan Archives. An enquiry sent to them said they were probably destroyed by enemy action during WW2.

As it stands this seems to be the end of the road.

The Genealogist website

Has anyone else tried this website (I am on a free trial at the moment which expires on 27th.
I tried looking for a relative who I am having great trouble finding - nothing.
I tried looking up BMDs on others who I already have on my Tree and couldn't get anything at all on the various names.
I tried looking myself up and found nothing!

Is there something different about how this website works as I have had absolutely no success with anything I have tried to find i.e. - doesn't exist.

Ancestry - UK switch over to new version is

is 15 Dec - just popped up on my front page.
Ancestry - UK switch over to new version is

Nathaniel M Pigott - the challenge continues.........

This gentleman is the brick wall I most want to raze to rubble but even after 8yrs I have probably only just loosened some mortar but at the same time probably added another layer of bricks! So if you have some spare time and fancy a challenge I'd be very grateful for some fresh eyes - mine are jaded.

The family returned from Australia on 30 September 1896 on the Austral. Mr & Mrs C R Pigott, J S Pigott 13, Four children and 1 infant. which accounts for all the births of the children they had before leaving for Australia and the ones they had in Australia apart from the illusive Nathaniel - whose birth is a mystery.

Nathaniel first pops up in the 1901 census.

The 1901 census record reference is RG13 Piece 800 Folio 52 Page 16 and he is shown as son born in Bega NSW Australia - but his birth has already been searched for in Australia and not been found - all his siblings who were born there births have been found and he wasn't with them on the ship.

Then along comes the 1911 census

The 1911 census record reference in RG14 Piece 4374 Registration District 59 Household Schedule 68. It shows 8 living children - all found and accounted for and 3 deceased children - 2 accounted for so GUESSING the third is Nathaniel but no record of his death in the UK can be found. The family lived in Whitstable in Kent so the registration area is Blean.

I came across a medal sold 28 March 2012 by Dix Noonan and Webb - the listing had Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1902 (5456 Pte. M. Pigott, 2nd Dragoon Gds.) some edge bruising to reverse, very fine £90-120. I contacted the QDG archives and they confirmed the soldier with that number was a Nathaniel M Pigott and provided the following information.

Thank you for your request for information on the above named soldier. This has been a long and difficult search with I am afraid very poor results. (see below). This record will be kept alive and if any new information arrives we will inform you.

PRIVATE NATAHNIEL M PIGOTT 5456 QUEENS BAYS (2ND DRAGOON GUARDS)
Enlisted c1901 possibly Aldershot
Records searched:
1901 Barrack census dated 31st March 1901 Aldershot. (He does not appear on this roll).
1901 Barrack census for 3rd Station Hospital Wellington Lines Aldershot (He does not appear on this roll)
1901 South Africa Medal roll. He appears as a Private on this roll entitled to the South Africa Medal with 4 clasps Cape Colony: Orange Free State: Transvaal: SA02 Location of medal not known.
1901-02 List of casualties for the Boer War (He does not appear on this list)
WW1 1914 Star Roll. (He does not appear on this list)
On-Line Records at findmypast and ancestry. Apart from his entry on the SA medal roll no records could be found.
When the peace treaty was signed to end the war in SA the Queens Bays moved to Middleburgh where they spent the next 5 years on occupation duties. They returned to London (Hounslow) in 1908.
In 1910 they moved to Aldershot, Hampshire where they stayed until embarking for France & Flanders in 1914

In all this he was allegedly born in 1889 so he would've somewhere between 12 -14 when he was in the QDG and fighting in the Boer war. Not necessarily impossible I know.

I'm fast beginning to think he was an unofficial adopted son which if that is the case I probably don't have any chance of finding out who he really was - but do we think it is safe to assume he had died by 1911 as he appears to be included in the number of children of the family and possibly died in South Africa - in which case why is there no record of his death in QDG archives?.

The 10 family children are as follows:
Shreeve John Paynton Pigott b 26 Feb 1883 Canterbury Kent UK d 2 Nov 1956 Guildford Surrey England
Amelia Grace Mary Pigott b 1886 B'ham UK d 1963 UK
Ralph Pigott b 1888 Jellet NSW Australia d 25 Sept 1916 France
Augusta Claudia Pigott b 9 Jul 1891 Picton NSW Australia d 1979 UK
Cecilia Ann Maud Pigott b 9 Sept 1894 Picton NSW Australia d 1958 UK
Launcelot Pouncey Pigott b 8 Feb 1896 Picton NSW Australia d 1958 UK
Henriette Marguerite Piggot b&d 1897 Kent UK
Richard Barrington Pigott b 11 Jan 1899 Kent UK d 21 Dec 1916 France
Charles Judd Pigott b 1905 d 1906 Kent UK
Rosemary Agnes Pigott b 1907 Kent UK d 1919 Kent UK

Nathaniel would've been born between Ralph and Augusta.
Nathaniel M Pigott - the challenge continues.........

Stumped Tree!

lundi 16 novembre 2015

Hello I'm new to Ancestry and I am having difficulty trying to find my grandfather branches!
Samuel Strachan was born 15/11/1879 in East Rainton, Durham along with his siblings James 1876 & Margaret 1882. The 1901 census has him living with his parents and the 1911 one he is married to Elizabeth Dinning but other than these I cannot find anything else for him, not even his birth.

Samuel's marriage certificate names his parents as Thomas & Margaret ? I cannot find Margaret's maiden name. I believe his parents originated from Scotland and married there. I suspect they had other children before Samuel as Margaret was 33yrs old when Samuel was born. I have trawled the Scotland Peoples web site and have found a Thomas Strachan ( b:1846) & Margaret Cranston (b:1846)marrying in 1863 they have 2 sons and a daughter but I don't know if this one is the right as there were other Thomas & Margaret marriages.
Can anyone help me climb my branches!

Surname should be REES of course, and this set of records is not among those at Ancestry [that's why I could never find him when I had a sub]. However, on doing a casual search today at Familysearch I found:

Name George James Ress
Event Type Census
Event Date 1911
County Overseas Military
Age 21
Birthplace Cowes Isle Of Wight, Hampshire
Record Type Institution

And FMP have the record of course.

I wonder if some kind FTFer would let me know what is on the census for him, esp. which regiment / where located.

Ancestor missing in 1851 and 1871 census

mercredi 11 novembre 2015

I have hit a brick wall with my ancestor named George Ricketts, he was born in London 1821. At some stage he moved to Derby and worked for Midland Railway. He married a Hannah Fletcher in 1848, on the marriage certificate he was a Pointer on the Railway but he then became a Valet/Butler. I cannot find him anywhere on the 1851 census and is not listed with Hannah. However I know he came home as he was there for the death of a child in 1853. I also cannot find him in 1871 but in 1861 he was at home with Hannah. I have tried everything. My question really is - is there a list of people in service and can I find him any other way? I also cannot find him in 1841 but do not know alot about him before he moved to Belper in Derby. Any help would be gratefully received.

Last time I looked at British Columbia records at Familysearch they had partial transcriptions only. Now I see there are many downloadable images which I've had fun with today (dates are not all the same or complete but it covers quite a large period).

Help with Ancestry tree please

I have finally taken the plunge and uploaded a Gedcom to Ancestry. I'm quite pleased with the result, particularly the way it has retained my own sources, which are in my own note form.

I am enjoying discovering a few more sources from 'Hints' but am coming unstuck with one aspect (I think I have noticed the problem on other people's tree). If I add a marriage source to a couple already on the tree it makes two marriage events with two sets bride and groom. I then have a difficult job of deciding which ones to delete (not the ones with the descendants!!) and when I do so the source is removed.

I think (from my FH program) I should be adding the source to the COUPLE or EVENT and not to one person but I can't for the life of me see how to do this. HELP!!!!

Free anti-virus software

As a customer of TalkTalk (I understand the hackers have my bank sortcode and account number and my e-mail address) and already being a bit paranoid about being hacked into I am now considering installing something extra like free AVG as an anti-virus program. I am already using Microsoft Security Essentials.

1. Is MSE sufficient on it's own to keep me protected
2. Will they work together or will I have to uninstal MSE

Any advise would be gratefully received.

From FMP I have the baptism record of Elester Waldron, b. 29th Sep 1904 and baptised 16th Oct 1904,St Mark's, Ford, Plymouth. The parents are given as Samuel & Emily Waldron.

What I have not been able to find are

i) The marriage of Samuel and Emily
ii) The death of Samuel which I believe must have occured 1904/5 as Emily goes on to marry Malachi Stark Q1 1905. The 1905 marriage registration give the name of Emily Louisa Waldron.

Suspect I will have to get the certificate to pin this down but was wondering if anybody is able to help.

Lots of confusion over Elester's name in various family tree - Waldron, Waldon, Maldron, Maldon etc, etc

Thanks for any help you can provide
