Where is Jane and her daughter Sarah? Help please

Instead of doing some urgent paperwork to finish up G's business decided to go back to ancestry :)

Cant believe over 10 years ago seem to have abandoned a few of my Horsteads.

I have Jane Horstead born 1838 to James and Mary Ann Horstead (my GGPx2) in Ratcliffe, Middx

She marries a man called George William Stapleton 1 May 1859 in Holborn. In 1861 she is alone working as a servant in Woodford Essex, noted as a widow :( A daughter, Sarah Jane born 1860 is living with grandparents back in east end.

Can anyone see either of them after the 1861 please? Ive tried looking for a marriage for a Jane stapleton and there are lots but following through the likely ones in London area, cant seem to find a match or a kiddie called Sarah with them - cant find a definite marriage for the girl Sarah either born 1860.

Any help gratefully received as I dont have the brain power or tenacity I had a decade ago.

Irish BMD records

mardi 30 août 2016

Hi everyone. I've just seen this and thought it may be of interest to those of you who have Irish ancestors.

http://ift.tt/1t5wVDl

I don't know if the link will work, but basically the historic Irish civil registers will be available online on the irishgenealogy.ie website from Thurs 8th September (i.e. probably - hopefully - births over 100 years ago, marriages 75yrs, & deaths 50 yrs). Free. So hopefully a few brick walls will fall!

Time allowed to register birth

I was trying to remember how long they had to register birth before a fine kicked in. Was it 6 weeks guys? Just talking to a friend recently and she mentioned how when her dad claimed his pension they said he was 4 weeks too early. Im guessing this was a case of mum changing his birth date to avoid the fine.

Pre 1915 BDM, Ancestry

Hi guys,

Is it me or have Ancestry changed the name of the old Free BDM to Civil Registration? I'm looking all over for those records that I saw yesterday under the free header and now it says Civil Registration.

Mums cousin died a few years ago and she is left and equal share with his cousins, we were hoping that she would inherit so that it would pay for her care at the moment but this is dragging on and on. Just spoke to the solicitor and he said they employed a professional genealogist to track down 2 cousins on his other side of the family. Just wondering if anybody on here would be able to beat them to it!!!!!
I know how quick some of you are.

Intermittent computer connection.

dimanche 28 août 2016

For the last few days I have been losing my internet connection on my desktop computer. I keep getting a pop up saying that a network connection is unplugged! Have check all cables and all seem ok. Because of this using the desktop is nigh impossible. Am on iPad at the moment which has no problems. Am with Virgin for broadband and desktop is using Windows XP.

Anyone any ideas?

Could anyone near Eyethorne kindly check a headstone shown here: http://ift.tt/2bzUtfz and see if the date for Alfred could be 1864 and not 1861.

Missing Blunts/Hodges

samedi 27 août 2016

If any one fancies a challenge, I am completely stuck with this (although some one will probably come up with something really obvious that I have missed!)

In 1871 (RG10-570-F14-P23) I have:-

Susan Blunt, Head, 27 (mistranscribed as 29), unmarried, born Wotton, Bucks
Mary Jane Blunt, Daughter, 4, born Bromley, Middlesex
George Hodges, Visitor, Wid (with something else I can't read), 27, born Bromley, Middlesex.

I then have a marriage for Susan and George 11 Jul 1871 Bethnal Green.

In 1881 (RG11-494-F123-P22) Susan and George are together with no children.

In 1891 (RG12-320-F116-P39) They have Violet Ann Hodges, granddaughter 10 months born Bromley London with them.

I think I have found the birth reg for Mary Jane, but I can't find her anywhere after 1871, and I can't find any record for Violet (searching both Hodges and Blunt), and I can't find any of them in 1911.

I don't need Susan prior to 1871 (I have her with her parents), but I really want to know who Violet belongs to and what happened to Mary Jane.

Frances and Bert

vendredi 26 août 2016

These are not my family members, they are connected to my 2nd cousin's mother's family in a parcel of papers and photos. Nothing on the back. My 2nd cousin's mother was from Nottingham, her maiden name was Grainger but she didn't have an aunt Sarah.

Any idea of the regiment? Can't quite see the cap badge though he's dressed very like my granddad who was in the Royal Field Artillery - I can see spurs. There's a badge on his cuff too.

Thanks for taking a look,

Frances and Bert

Opinions please - different fathers name marriage/birth cert

I've been kickstarted back into my research :)

I've had a brick wall for some time, and finally decided to start chipping away at it.

I've been looking for a marriage in Liverpool for a Charles Redmond/Mary Kenny, and came to the conclusion that either (a) they married in Ireland, or (b) Mary invented a husband to save the stigma of admitting she had an illegitimate child.
(I haven't been able to find a marriage in Ireland either, but that might be down to lack of online records)

I have found what could be the right marriage, but the man is named PATRICK, not Charles. Could this be the right one, and if so, why change his name?

Full story/details.

Working backwards, from census info & his marriage certificate, we have a Joseph Redmond who was born 1855/6 with a father Charles, a mariner.
Joseph moved to the Tyldesley area & was a coal miner. He consistently said he was born in Liverpool.

There are 2 births around the right date, one in Manchester & one in Liverpool.

In 1861 he is living with his mother in Callows Terrace Liverpool, and Mary says she is a widow. Ancestry has transcribed this as Redman but I'm pretty sure its the right people.
I've not been able to find Charles anywhere.
In 1871 the Joseph [Redman] who I think is my chap is working in a colliery & boarding in Shevington, but the age is a year out.

The other Joseph was an upholsterer. On the 1871 census he is a boarder in Liverpool - this census says he is also born in Liverpool. He died in 1879 (reported in the Liverpool Mercury 24 Feb 1979)

The birth certificate for Joseph Redmond born in Liverpool in March 1856 names father Charles Redmond, mother Mary Kenny. Charles is a mariner & the birth was at 76 Hornby St, Liverpool. I have not found a baptism for him but I suspect his parents were Catholic so the records aren't online.

The marriage certificate I've just received is Patrick Redmond, mariner, father Joseph Redmond, a painter & glazier. They married by licence in St Paul's, Liverpool, on 14 June 1855.
Both were living at 23 Hornby St at the time of marriage. (No great coincidence: it was a very heavily populated area) The witnesses are Hargreaves Woollacott and Mary Shaw, no obvious connection.

There is a possible death registration for a Patrick Redmond in Liverpool in Dec 1856, which is on order.

This does shed some light on the problem but poses more questions.

Patrick's father is named Joseph so its understandable that he'd name his firstborn after him.
But I can't think of an obvious reason why someone would marry as Patrick but be known in his daily life as Charles.
Its understandable that Joseph never knew his father (assuming the 1856 death is the right person) but his mother Mary registered the birth and this is 9 months after their marriage so you'd think she'd remember her husband's name! Joseph obviously thought his father was called Charles as he named his firstborn son after him.

So do you think this is the right marriage or do I put away my pickaxe for another day?
Opinions please - different fathers name marriage/birth cert

Canadian Research help please

Any help would be welcomed please on my grandfathers sister who left the West Midlands for Ontario (believed) around 1905. Her name was Eliza or Elizabeth Lunn and she is thought to be Ward by marriage. She died in 1925. She had a daughter Florence Gertrude Ward who died in 1989.

Eliza left terrible poverty in the West Midlands, I am hoping she had a better life in Canada.

Alexander Dickenson 1876

Alexander Dickenson was b.1876 J.A.S qtr West Derby Liverpool

After his father Joseph's death in 1879 Alexander went to live with his Grandparents Miles & Ann Amelia
Dickenson.Miles was a Prim.Methodist Minister who moved to various stations of his circuit.
I know that Alexander was shown as living with his Grandparents on the 1881c at Cambrian Crescent Chester St Oswalds RG11 3560/43.In the 1891c he is living at Laurel Grove Ormskirk RG12 3039/120 with his Grandad & Gt.Aunt Susannah (mistranscribed as Miles Wife).
Alexander is 14 & working as a Post Office Clerk.

I have some very sketchy notes which state that Alexander m.Charlotte Elizabeth R. Harding when he was 23 & lived at Birkdale still working as a Post Office Clerk.I also have him as a Carpenter.
I am now needing to know more about Alexander who was my Gt Grandmother Margaret Dickensons brother.

Spence & Whyte in Marnoch

lundi 22 août 2016

With new credits and new inspiration, I've started to investigate my great x4 grandparents:

Isobel WHYTE (OTP) and Charles SPENCE (Marnoch) married in 1798 in Turriff.

They had several children in Marnoch over the years:
http://ift.tt/2bJGGml

Isobel and Charles are living together, alone, in the 1841 census in Marnoch.

I didn't find Isobel in the 1851.

There is a Charles Spence, Boarder in Turriff in the 1851, staying with Elizabeth Alexander, Pauper & Head of household. I know of no relationship from mine to Alexanders.

That Charles Spence died in 1855. In both the 1851 and the DC he is listed as a Chelsea Pensioner. I don't know that I think that is consistent with the baptism records of Charles and Isobel? So I don't think he's mine.

So, I'm thinking that Charles and Isobel died between the two censuses. I suppose they might have immigrated??? Their daughter from whom I'm descended did not leave until the mid-1850s.

I can't find burials or DCs for them, but I'll start double checking my work.

John Thomas Fieldhouse

born Hull 28 April 1893. I have him in East Yorkshire census 1901 (Pocklington) and 1911 (Hull) and also have his WW1 pension record. The latter is very sketchy - John was with the ASC as a driver for just 11 months (July 1915 to June 1916) and didn't serve overseas, so no medal index card or medal rolls. He was discharged due to being flat footed and the pension papers indicate a return to Hull and name two of his married sisters who lived in the city. All his siblings remained within a 20 mile radius of Hull.

I can't find him after 1916 - neither a 1939 entry, nor a probable death registration.

Can anyone spot him, please?

Trying to make a connection, but can't!!!

samedi 20 août 2016

I have been researching my family tree which can be found here: - http://ift.tt/2b6AWXC

But I am having a real struggle to make the connection between Captain Thomas Blount (1612-1706) and Thomas Blount or Blunt who is married to Ann Byrch/Birch or somebody called Ann.

Thomas (the potential son) and Ann had a son, also called Thomas born in Worcestershire, UK.

The records I have found for Captain Thomas Blount lists his birth place as Sodington, (no place except Sodington Hall exists), Worcestershire, UK, and his emigration to North Carolina in 1695, where he died, his sons and Daughters were born in Sodington hall, this includes a Thomas, but the record I found for a Thomas (whose father is Thomas and mother is Ann) was born in Ribbesford, Worcestershire, 8 miles away.

Sorry it's confusing, both Captain Thomas and the potential son were married to an Ann.

Also alot of the Blount family I have researched are from Worcestershire, too many Blounts to be a coincidence.

Or perhaps I just have everything muddled up, or I have gone on a wild goose chase.

Somebody help please!!!

Marcus

"Rob Roy Town" West Ham

mercredi 17 août 2016

I know that in the 1850's the area to the west of West Ham was known as "Rob Roy Town" and that the west ham information on historical sites only say "was for a short time" and "reason unknown"

A friend and myself are researching this as part of his tree and we have an idea.
I know that the society of odd fellows had a lodge nearby in Stratford which used the same name.

We have the opinion that there is a connection to Scotland and the Scottish workers who came down and helped build the Eastern Railway
The whole area was open fields and marsh, but it could have been a temporary settlement for the workers.
I have had this in a line in my tree, where he was a bricklayer in Suffolk and the address on the 1861 census has never existed, except the name of the farm area he was in.
This could be the same case

Can anyone tell be the content of

St Pancras cemetery look up ?

Just wondered if anyone could find who is in this grave at the above cemetery . We think it could be an Evans buried before 1925 as we have a monumental masons bill for cleaning and replacing marble headstone and kerb ing and putting memorial in order . Evan Evans picked up the bill . The grave number is 147-w-6. I tried looking at deceased online but you have to subscribe to see anything . Son in law phoned the cemetery but the lady he spoke to didn't seem to know how to find the record of who is in the grave . We wonder if it could be a first wife of his Evans ancestor . Any help much appreciated

Where did Patrick Conboy go?

My Gt Grandmother, Bridged Brady nee Conboy's father was Patrick Conboy a Coachman when she married my Gt Grandfather Michael Brady in July 1872 in Rathmines, Co. Dublin. The Marriage Parish records revealed Bridget Conboy’s mother: Marie Stafford

According to the 1901 she's aged 43 and 1911 Census Bridget was aged 54 born in Co. Roscommon.

I've alread found a marriage in 1875 for Anne Conboy who is think must be Bridget's sister.
Anne Conboy spinster of Full age of 32 Belgrave Rd
Married Thomas Farnsworth, bachelor, Coal Hewer of 29 Charlmont St
at the Church of Ireland in the Parish of St. Peter in the City of Dublin.
Thomas Farnsworth signed his name as JOSEPH FARNSWORTH!
Anne Conboy’s father was Patrick Conboy, a Coachman

I've been looking at the Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915 and found that Bridget had another sister!

Name: Elizabethum Conboy
Baptism Age: 0
Event Type: Baptism
Birth Date: 1850
Baptism Date: 28 Jul 1850
Baptism Place: Elphin, Roscommon, Ireland
Parish Variants: Creeve, Elphin and Creeve
Diocese: Elphin
Father: Patricu Conboy Mother: Maria Stafford

What I can't find is Patrick Conboy marrying Maria/Mary Stafford!

Perhaps one of them died and the remaining spouse re-married? Maybe they emigrated, but can't find anything as yet.

Can anyone help Please? I'm going cross eyed looking for Staffords and Conboys! :crying:

35mm USB slide scanners

Hi

Wondering if any one has any experince with USB 35mm slide scanners. I'v just inherited several hundres and want to scanner them to review and store as required.

Seems to be a fair number on the market but they mostly seem to require that 3 slides are mounted into a holder before the holder is passed through the scanner. Seems very slow and fiddly when I have several hundreds to do.

Anybody know of any alternatives scanners or methods

Thanks

Bucks Parish Registers

Does anyone know where I can get images of Bucks Parish Registers, specifically Wooton Underwood?

Transcriptions are available under England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975, but they don't show DOB, and Bucks FHS have a booklet of transcriptions, but I would like to view the images to see if there is any more information as something doesn't add up.

I am looking for children of Thomas and Anne Blunt born between 1829 and 1847. A search has found 8 children born during that period in Wooton to Thomas and Anne Blunt, and I have a 9th child on the 1851 census who I can't find in the registers.

However the issue I have is with 2 girls, Susan and Emma. Susan is baptised 16 Jun 1844 and Emma 30 Aug 1844, all the other children are baptised approximately 2-3 years apart. I have Emma with the family in 1851, but can't find a birth registration, and I have a birth registration for Susan, but can't find her on the 1851 census! Both Susan and Emma appear on later censuses. I don't think one of them is an illegitimate daughter of one of the other children as the oldest female that generation would only be 9.

It is unlikely that there is another couple with the same names as Thomas's father was from outside the area so it wasn't a common local surname.

Ernest Rainbow, Nottingham

dimanche 14 août 2016

I have a solicitor's letter concerning the distribution of the estate of Arthur and Sarah Smith of Nottingham which has come to me, and as I am not related I'd like it to go to someone with a firm connection.

Harriet Rainbow is one of the beneficiaries, I've researched her and her siblings and found she had at least one child, they are together on the 1939 register and I think this chap appears on an Ancestry tree, there's a pic of some medals on a public tree associated with an Ernest Rainbow 1911-1993 which are the same dates for the Ernest Arthur Rainbow I'm looking for. My ancestry sub has expired - could someone take a look please? Hoping his parents are Ernest Rainbow and Harriet (nee Smith).

A Nottingham man, and possibly his marriage

samedi 13 août 2016

Some family papers and photos of my late 2nd cousin have been passed to me. As his father never knew about our side of the family because he was the secret son of my great aunt, virtually everything relates to his mother's family of which I know nothing (though I have started to piece things together). So few of the photos have anything to identify them.

To begin, this chap had his photo taken in a Nottinghan, studio (nothing more on the reverse, it is dark green card)

Is he the same bridegroom as in this summer wedding photo (nice crop of runner beans in the back!). Also wondering about the uniform.

I'll be very grateful if someone can open up the 1939 register for Sarah E Johnston, living at 7 Mereland Road, Blackpool. I did an address search and there are 2 houses listed as no.7. I believe the one I need is the second in the list.
Thanks very much.

PC help please.

Hoping someone more PC savvy can help me?
My computer has been so slow for ages now and inputting my text sometimes takes a second or two to show?
I have done virus checks and scans but nothing shows up, so I am hoping nothing is amiss that way. However, I noticed when I go on the 'Page' in the toolbar under encoding it is clicked onto Unicode( UTF-8) . There is also Western European (Windows), should it be moved onto that , seeing as I am in the UK?
Can others in the UK members check and see if they are on Western European or Unicode-8 for me please and then I will get an idea if mine is right or wrong?

Cheers Twiglet.

Firefox and Printing

jeudi 11 août 2016

A few weeks ago I changed my browser to Firefox and shortly afterwards found that the printer (A HP laser Jet) would not accept any printing jobs. It works fine on T/bird though.

On changing back to Chrome everything was normal again and the printer worked perfectly.

Have been through most of the on line stuff about this problem and still find what is causing the problem. Could there be anything that I have missed?

It is a pity, as I rather like Firefox.

Date for my 3x great grandmother?

I have been very fortunate to receive a photo of my 3x great grandmother and wonder if anyone would like to hazard guess at the date?

The photo was taken by Thomas Ayers of 3 Clarence Place, Regent Road, Yarmouth [Great Yarmouth] whom I have already googled and was at that address in Regent Road from 1858.

She died of bronchitis, pneumonia congestion, and collapse in 1882, I already had this photo of her taken at Margate when she was older and obese.

Thanks for taking a look.

Interview My Great-Grandmother

Hello I am new to this Forum. I have been doing Genealogy for several years now.

So I am thinking about calling My Great-Grandmother and doing a Genealogy/Family History Interview. She is 90 years old and not doing well health wise over the last few years. Sad truth is she probably has only a couple good years left. I been told by a couple people (My Mom and Great-Aunt) I should ask her some stuff after I had ask some things.
She is the oldest living person in My Family and the last one who has connection with the Generation of My 2nd and 3rd Great-Grandparents. And she may even be able to help me out with my 3rd Great-Grandparent. We were at her house on her Birthday but there was so many people there and a lot going on. I don't want to regret some day not calling her and asking her some questions or things about her family and other Genealogy related questions. she know I been doing Research on My Genealogy including her Family Ancestry.
Thing is I am not sure exactly what to ask? I know the more basic of course like her Marriages, Parents, Kids Births, etc,. What would be some good questions to ask?

London burial records

Does anyone know if it's possible to find who else is in a grave ? I have Abraham Evans buried 28/7/1899 at St Pancras cemetery Camden . I have his grave reference , certificate number 5521, grave 14 -T14. I am sure there will be other family in the grave but I've spent all afternoon trying to work out how to find out short of going to London ! Very grateful if anyone could advise me .

Help with possible U.S. military/law enforcement grave marker?

mardi 9 août 2016

Hi everyone :handshake:, I'm new here and I was hoping that someone could help me figure out what this marker means by my potential great grandfather's grave. He died in 1951 and I'm thinking that it is either a military or law enforcement marker, but I am unsure. Hopefully someone will be able to tell me more about it as it will help greatly in unraveling this family mystery. Thanks!

Purchased a New Mac Book shall I transfer my tree over?

Ive just purchased a new mac book as old mac was years old and struggling. Now all my data etc is on the old mac now I'm scared nervous about transferring the whole tree over to the new machine using gedcom. How will i ensure every fact/detail moves over by just exporting the file as a gedcom? Is there a better safer way of doing this???

Im using FTM for mac as my main software program.
