Finding a death-impossible
Hi I was wondering if anyone would be up for the challenge of trying to find a death as I'm not really having much luck.
I have the death of a Margaret Phillips nee Wray/Reay in 1814 and on the record it mentions that she is a widow but I haven't been able to come across the death of her husband Robert Phillips on Ancestry which I was praying would provide an estimated birth for him. Myself and a lot of other trees have the 1740's so far. Margaret herself was born in 1741 according to the death and baptism I found for her.
There is a record on Durham Records Online pointing towards Darlington in 1796 but there's no estimated birth so I'm not sure if it is him or not.
Thank you :)

Conundrum of scam
dimanche 30 août 2015
I have had a problem Scam but wonder if anyone can help link these together. I will use the name A & B.
In early August I received an email from A who is in my address book and I have not been in touch with A for many years if at all by email. It was addressed correctly to me but A email address just looked odd and said sent from my i-phone.
Two weeks ago I received an email from B who I am in touch with about once a year. Again it was addressed correctly to me but B email just looked odd with a BT address but ending (jp) and said sent from my i-phone.
I created a new individual message to these people and asked them if they had contacted me. A said that my email address was not in her address book and that she did not have any form of telephone.
B said that it was over a year ago that she last contacted me but she did have an i-phone.
Neither of these went into my Spam box as the address was correct. Unfortunately all messages open on my tablet with no choice of preview so I was able to see the content both started with http/ but were different. I did not click on them but they both ended with the name of the sender and that was supposed to be ME but with A or B correct email address under where the signature would go.
A & B do not know each other. Is it possible that someone can access my contacts address book? The emails were deleted for ever straight away.

Philadelphia Death Cert 1906-1953
samedi 29 août 2015
My ancestry.com membership has expired and I am wondering if someone could attach the images of any "James Joseph Cunningham" (might be a few) born in between 1917 and 1919....might be a few matches and might show up under just James Cunningham as well in Ancestry`s Philadelphia Death Cert database. I know this is not alot to go on but I think the matches might be manageable. James is my new found grandfather who I have been trying to learn the fate of...he is not in the SSDI and so if he is not in here then he might just be alive......but just nearing 100, which is unlikely.
Thanks in advance!

Missing 1841 census
vendredi 28 août 2015
and also looking for the marriage record.
Alice Thomas b.1812 and Thomas Hocking, b. 1812 reportedly marry in Camborne, 1833. There are several trees on ancestry with them, one in particular seems to be well researched. He indicates on his tree that he had a researcher look up the marriage record in the PR.
No one seems to have found them in the 1841 census. They have children born in Cornwall in the early 1840s, so they should be there.
Here's their findagrave page. Note that their DOBs & Marriage dates are unsubstantiated, except for the one tree's reference to the marriage in 1833:
http://ift.tt/1IqAxCm;
** Can anyone find them in 1841?
* Can anyone find the marriage record? I've looked in the Cornwall OPC without success, and I have sent a message to the researcher, so I may be able to retrieve the info from him.
Thanks!
Sarah

WW1 Hampshire Regiment
Hi
I am researching a family member named Horace Owen Wyatt b 1896 in Dibden, Hampshire, Regiment number 355786 who was part of the 1st/9th Batalion (cycists, I think) and have found his medal card but can find no record of his service. How can I find out if this part of the "burnt records" or am I not looking in the right place?
Any thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you
Gill

Deciphering the 1841 Census
Hi there, I'm back on the trail - having had tons of help on here of finding my real grandmother, I am now going back in time to see how far I can go with the Rickard side of the family.
I am on the 1841 census, and am sure I have found my Great Great Grandfather Nicolas Rickard, but I cannot read the scrawling handwriting very well.
It looks like Nicolas, aged 2, is living with his 25 year old mother, and a baby sibling with another family. There doesn't seem to be a husband there.
Under the Profession, Trade, Employment of of Independent Means there is no entry but the three of them are bracketed together.
There isn't even an address that I can make out just the name Tideford (I think) 1 house.
Am I allowed to put a copy of the census page on here?
Any help much appreciated

Just a reminder - FreeReg2
If you haven't used it already, do have a little play with the new FreeReg format.
I think the search options and results are clearer and easier to use. It now displays brides as well as grooms and it is this version that will have the regular data updates.
Last night it yielded the marriage of my 6xgt grandparents, at last giving me the maiden surname of the bride and so a new line to explore. On another line it came up with a possible bp for a 4xgt grandmother. Her youngest son was named Nicholas, a "new" name for this branch of the family, and the father in the possible bp was Nicholas - I also discovered the probable siblings of my ancestress and the probable marriage of the parents. I knew where she had married and had checked the parish registers to no avail, and also the registers of parishes round about. Had widened my sweep, but not far enough in one direction!
These were Norfolk searches. I find FreeReg particularly good for Norfolk.

H.F. Down
Hi,
I'm looking for references, and above all, the full name of H.F. Down.
He was an adult during the 1870s. He had two sisters, Nellie and Florence Down. Their mother was Louisa Down. Julius Manning was married with one of the sisters.
Can someone help me with this?

Occupation, Staymaker
Anyone like to comment/help with the definition of a Staymaker, please?
My Staymaker was a young married man in Patrington, a village in rural East Yorks (he had migrated there from rural Lincolnshire). In the baptisms of many of his children (1790 to 1805) he is described as a staymaker. Later he becomes a baker and coal merchant, which is what he says he is in his will in 1841.
I can only find 'corset maker' as a definition. I am not really saying this is not possible but I have at the back of my mind some other meaning to do with hay ricks or some such??? It could be a more likely occupation?

Ancestry records a burial without stating where it was, turns out it came from familysearch's england deaths and burials database.

The batch number is IO3296-0, film num is 918388.

UK, Apprentices Indentured in Merchant Navy, 1824-1910
Had a search and found the record of my g/g/grandfather, age 16, apprenticed to Hugh Barkly for 4years 11/2/1828.
In 1834 he was a Captain and I have a record taken from one of his diaries. In 1845/46 he was Captain of an opium clipper Water Witch on the run between India and China.
I have been searching for a number of years to find out about his sea career gaining snippets along the way. Now I have a place to start the search is on again. A quick search on Google for Hugh Barkly possibly connects him to the West Indies trade.
If anyone can help it would be most appreciated. I do have his family history it is only his sea career I am trying to find out about.

Cunningham conundrum in Canada
We (Jeff Scratch & Patch & myself) are hunting down information about two? Cunningham boys, Herbert and Edgar, apparent sons of Charles Cunningham and his wife Mary E Robinson.
(previous thread about Charles Eugene Cunningham eldest brother of Herbert & Edgar.)
http://ift.tt/1V4Fdqy
Our dilemma
We have a birth record for Edgar Cunningham, born 26 Dec 1878 at Chatham, Kent, Ontario, Son of Charles Cunningham& Mary Elizabeth Robinson
http://ift.tt/1EfbcQP
but nothing else, no death, census appearance in parental home, marriage.
We do have census records showing a son Herbert in the family home, but NO bp or birth
1881 aged 5 http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca...e008207954.jpg
1891 aged 14, apprentice baker http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca...8175-00276.jpg
1901 can’t find him
1909 marriage - 24 Jul 1909 at Toronto, York, Ontario Herbert Cunningham Age: 36 Birth Year (Estimated): 1873 Son of Charles Cunningham & Mary Elizt Robertson
Married Julia Mcuen Age: 40 Birth Year (Estimated): 1869 Daughter of William Mcuen & Mary Barrett
http://ift.tt/1V4FbPu
1911 can’t find OUR couple I think the following is for a different pair
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca...e002029051.jpg
1914 death 26 Aug 1914 at Toronto, York, Ontario Herbert Cunningham Age: 41 Birth Year (Estimated): 1873 Son of Chas. Cunningham & Mary Robinson
I wonder if Edgar & Herbert could be the same?? (rounded his age up slightly when marrying) whilst Jeff thinks there were probably two boys. He has searched resources in his local library but cannot find a death or burial for baby Edgar nor a birth for Herbert.
Opinions and help, please.

Cunningham conundrum in Canada
We (Jeff Scratch & Patch & myself) are hunting down information about two? Cunningham boys, Herbert and Edgar, apparent sons of Charles Cunningham and his wife Mary E Robinson.
(previous thread about Charles Eugene Cunningham eldest brother of Herbert & Edgar.)
http://ift.tt/1V4Fdqy
Our dilemma
We have a birth record for Edgar Cunningham, born 26 Dec 1878 at Chatham, Kent, Ontario, Son of Charles Cunningham& Mary Elizabeth Robinson
http://ift.tt/1EfbcQP
but nothing else, no death, census appearance in parental home, marriage.
We do have census records showing a son Herbert in the family home, but NO bp or birth
1881 aged 5 http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca...e008207954.jpg
1891 aged 14, apprentice baker http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca...8175-00276.jpg
1901 cant find him
1909 marriage - 24 Jul 1909 at Toronto, York, Ontario Herbert Cunningham Age: 36 Birth Year (Estimated): 1873 Son of Charles Cunningham & Mary Elizt Robertson
Married Julia Mcuen Age: 40 Birth Year (Estimated): 1869 Daughter of William Mcuen & Mary Barrett
1911 cant find OUR couple I think the following is for a different pair

What's the best family tree software for a relative beginner?
Hi all,
I started doing genealogy properly a few months back and have been using free trials on Ancestry and findmypast, both of which have since expired. I'd like to find the best deal possible, and so have come here for some advice.
Family Tree Maker 2014 (is there a 2015 yet?) seems to be a good deal; the Platinum edition is £38.99 on Amazon UK and includes a six-month Premium Membership subscription to Ancestry. Premium Membership is £13.99 a month or £119.99 a year, and so clearly that is a very good saving, and the software itself seems to have good reviews.
Are there any offers like this with other family tree software packages, or indeed simply other subscription offers in general? I'd really like to access records for Scotland, but sadly I think the only way to do that is to purchase credits on ScotlandsPeople.
Thanks for your time.

Never had this happen before
My Husband's Great Grandmother was illegitimate and her Mother had never been married.
Two years later she did marry, a William Thacker and had several children.
Someone who didn't bother to get Great Grandmother's birth certificate has attached her to William's tree as his daughter and has informed me of her Grandfather! and Great Grandfather! and if I need any further help she would be more than wiling to share her tree.
No Thanks lol

Hi, I successfully transferred my own raw material to the familytreedna site but I have now received raw material for my sisters dna test. When I go to the familytreedna site I keep getting my own account come up and I cant seem to upload and pay for sisters autosomnal transfer?
Any advice please. Ive tried logging out and then going in but it still seems to recognise its me and I cant see how I can add another test?

A fresh pair of eyes may be able to suggest the surname of this witness in an 1854 Liverpool Marriage. First witness surname.jpg
Archibald Trotter, 1700's, North Carolina or Virginia
Hi everyone, this is my first post here. Could anyone please help me in finding an Archibald Trotter living in North Carolina around the 1770s? To sum up my problem, my 4x great grandmother was Eliza Jane Trotter of Illinois, wife of James Taylor, and daughter of an Archibald (sometimes called Thomas Archibald) Trotter, born in North Carolina in around 1807. There seems to be some confusion on Archibald. A lot of sources try to say he was the son of William Joseph Trotter, named Thomas, and that Archibald was his middle name he went by later in life (probably because William Joseph and Archibald were both born in North Carolina and later lived in Illinois), but as you can see from these censuses, Archibald never goes by Thomas, and when I had an ancestry.com account I saw him mentioned getting a pension for serving in Black Hawks War in Illinois, and also his marriage certificate, and on both he is Archibald, not Thomas. Also, in the census sheets, Thomas Trotter is alive in the 1800 census, whereas in the three censuses for Archibald, although one says he was born around 1800 (maybe a mistake by someone the census taker was interviewing) the other two indicate he was born around 1807, so at least one of these censuses is incorrect.
http://ift.tt/1fxydCq
http://ift.tt/1fxydCs
What I did find elsewhere, is that in Mecklenburg County NC, there was an Archibald Trotter who witnessed a deed in 1778, perhaps he was Archibald (b. 1807)s father?
http://ift.tt/1fxydCu
Something else Ive noticed is that Archibald is a recurring name in descendants of James Trotter of Augusta County Virginia, born 1717 in Ireland.
One of his descendants here, Archibald A. Trotter, b. 1801.
http://ift.tt/1fxyg1c
It may be of note that this Archibald A. Trotter had a brother named William Harrison Trotter, and my Archibald (b. 1807) also has a son named William Harrison, though this could just be a coincidence because they might have been going for naming the children after President William Henry Harrison, or maybe William Harrison was another family name like Archibald.
Another two Archibalds descended from James Trotter:
24 Oct 1911 - Affidavit of Miss Kate Trotter [now deceased]
"I am sixty-two years of age. I am the daughter of Archibald D. Trotter, late
of Staunton, VA. I know from statements made to me by my father that he, my
father , was the son of John Trotter, who was the son of Isaac Trotter, who
was the son of James Trotter and I have heard my father say that his
grandfather, namely, James Trotter, was a Revolutionary soldier.
Archibald Trotter, who lived near Greenville, in Augusta County, was an uncle
of my father, Archibald D. Trotter. I never knew of or heard of any persons
of Trotter living either in Staunton or Augusta Countywith the exception of my
relatives of that name." [signed] S. Kate Trotter
>From the file of Fletcher Trotter and copy from Lois Pitts, submitted by
Sylvia Trotter Anderson
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.co...-09/0904931599
Anyway, if anyone could help me find any info on any Archibald Trotters living in North Carolina around the time of the 1700s, or if theres any evidence of James Trotter of Augusta County Virginia having a son or grandson named Archibald, I would greatly appreciate it.
Best wishes-
Nick

Incoming passengers to england
Hello Everybody, it appears that passenger lists on Ancestry go up to 1960. I would like to trace a family by the name of Warlock who arrived in England 1965 to 1975 from South Africa. Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers.

Useful tool - 19th Century boundaries England
From the WDYTYA magazine site:
Free 19th-century boundary tool goes online
A series of maps displaying historic boundaries across England can now be viewed online. Available free of charge, the London FamilySearch Centres Jurisdiction Maps tool allows users to view the precise locations of counties, civil registration districts, hundreds and Poor Law Unions as they appeared in 1851. Crucially for researchers, each map is superimposed on top of Google satellite imagery, meaning that it is possible to zoom in and view locations as they appear today. Test it out here.

Record Office: Scottish Brewing Archive Association - Glasgow
Hi all,
I just wondered whether any of you had ever been to the Scottish Brewing Archive Association in Glasgow, or lived near there. I wish to confirm my grandfather's employment records at McEwan's during the 1940s/50s, but sadly the SBAA's data is not online and so I would have to book an appointment and go in person.
If anyone lives near the SBAA and would be willing to go as my proxy then I'd be hugely grateful, as it would save me the price of an expensive return train ticket for the sake of an hour's research.
Many thanks!
