How can I connect relatives to the war medal registry unless I can find out the relatives enlistment number/regiment etc.? Conversely, how can I find their enlistment number and regiment?

Thanks

New sub rates for Ancestry

I have just had a renewal email from Ancestry UK for later in November and have noticed the price has gone up to £119.99 annually which is over £12 a year rise. I have emailed them and told them I think it is too much of a jump. I know it won`t get me anywhere but I had to make the point. What does everyone else think ?

How do I find John Smith?

Hi,
I have only just registered on this site, so here goes! My ancestor John Smith (unlucky already!) was a convict who was transported to Tasmania in 1836. His native place as written down for convict records was "Aimsbury, Cambridge". I have figured out this was probably Eynesbury, but never having been to the UK, I could stand corrected. He was born anywhere between 1792 and 1806, depending on which record is used. I purchased the Eynesbury BMD. There was only 1 John Smith baptised in this period - baptised 9/1/1795 to Henry and Hannah. I am doubtful that this is him as I am inclined to think he was born after 1800. Also, of his nine children, none was named Henry or Hannah. His first child was named Lucy, and there was a Charles Smith of St Neots married a Lucy Walton on Eynesbury on 19/6/1795. I'm wondering if they were the parents and John was born in St. Neots? Having already paid a fair bit for Eynesbury records I am reluctant to fork out for the St Neots records on the off chance that John Smith was baptised there. Can anyone help who has ideas or access to the St. Neots baptisms?
Thanks, Chris

Harriet and Sarah Smith

vendredi 30 octobre 2015

In 1852 Edwin Pitcher born 1831 Gloucestershire, parents Sarah and Jonah Pitcher, went to Australia traveling from Liverpool to Port Phillip Sidney. The ship was known as the "fever ship" as so many died. But I believe Edwin survived.

In the same year a newspaper article appeared

[near the top of third column from left]

NOTICE.-Should this meet the eye of EDWIN
PITCHER, native of Thornbury, Gloucestershire,
landed in Melbourne on the 22 nd day of December, 1852,
from the ship Ticonderago, he will hear of something to his
advantage by writing to his Uncle ORLANDO VAISEY,
Clarence Town, Williams River, New South Wales"

What I am now looking for is the family connection.

Orlando married Harriet Smith in 1839 back in Bristol, and Edwin's mother was called Sarah Smith.

Were they sisters? Sarah's parents were called William and Mary and I did find a daughter called Harriet with parents of the same name but in another article Harriet died in 1881 parents Thomas and Sabrina.

Am I looking at the correct Orlando and Harriet or have I got them mixed up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Opinions please of these photos

I would value opinions regarding this group photograph. My initial thought was that is was a family wedding but now I am not too sure as there are no signs of flowers or buttonholes. What I do know is that the man bottom left is my Grandfather. I think the other man on the front row could be an elder brother and two sisters either side of him.

These are two sisters in later life

This looks like the girl, bottom right.

Is this lady the other girl on the front row? (The man is my grandfather)

The next photograph, I am almost certain is the same man (Harry) on the front row of the above group. I would welcome some opinions please on that one.

I would also welcome some ideas on when they were taken. My grandfather was born in 1889.

Computer updates as recommended by microsoft - a warning

I have always tended to ignore these because I have no idea what it is all about. I use Windows 7 and that is about all I know!
My husband told me to always allow Microsoft to install updates!
Today I clicked "yes" to installing updates and guess what ............they tried 3 times to install this new thingy - Microsoft 10 I think - anyway, it is the one that everyone is having trouble with.
THEY FAILED with that update - my computer would not accept it thankfully.
I have not yet clicked on "accept" for the new updates - quite frankly I don't have a clue what most of them are - I cannot accept them individually, it is "all or nothing".
Basically, it would appear that Microsoft themselves are having as much trouble installing Microsoft 10. I personally have not tried to install it myself having heard so much about the disasters.
Obviously I must need some of the updates but do not have an option as to which ones should be installed. I haven't a clue what most of them do (or what any of them do if I am honest) but because computer keeps "freezing" thought I probably should add them.

How do others deal with "updates". All simple answers gratefully received! Sue

Missing Death

mardi 27 octobre 2015

Hello,

I'm trying to find a death for FREDERICK WILLIAM JEFFERY born in 1858 as Frederic. He married Kate Elizabeth Bone

The family is a bit of a mystery, I have located 7 children but I'm not sure the last one was his as the father's name was not on the baptism.

This is what I have:
First child, Lillian Naomi was born in 1881, Tonbridge, Kent but baptised in 1895 in Croydon, Surrey.
2nd - Horace John born 1883, baptised 25 Jul 1897 in Southborough nr Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
Then Alfred Harold born 1885 baptised 25 Jul 1897 in Southborough
Elsie Sabina born 02 Jun 1887 died in 1888 in Southborough
Eva Ethel born 1889 baptised 29 Jan 1899 in Southborough
Frederick William born 12 Nov 1891 baptised 29 Jan 1899 in Southborough
Lastly, Elizabeth Maud born in 1898 baptised 29 Jan 1899 in Southborough

It doesn't make sense for Lillian to be baptised all the way over in Croydon as the family had settled in Southborough long before.

I assumed Frederick sr died between 1898 and 1901 but I can't find his death anywhere. I tried between 1891 and 1901 but still nothing. I've tried name variations too but still nothing.

The family are together in 1891

Betsy Rogers Mitchell b1858

I'm stuck with the above Betsy Rogers Mitchell born 26 Jun 1858 daughter of Peter and Flora in Leith, Nr Edinburgh.

I have her in the 1861 and 1871 census but nothing further. She's not with the family in 1881 - can't find a marriage or death with the full name - there's too many to look at images on Scotlandspeople for Elizabeth or Betsy Mitchell as none jump out.

I thought I'd found her in Australia when I found someone with the same name in Victoria. However this one and another also born 1869 were cousins of the one born in Leith.

Am I missing something obvious?

Wills from Ireland

Hi, wondering if anyone has any experience of obtaining a will from Ireland. My gg-grandfather's will was proved at Limmerick 13 Mar 1885. I'm wondering if it is possible to get a copy. Anyone know the process?

From what I read, it seemes that if it still exists then it may be possible to see it in the reading rooms of the NIA. Not really an options for me at the moment, so can a copy be ordered?

Sometimes on the LDS site, pedigree Resource File , I have picked up some extra information at the bottom of the relevant page . This info. I found was submitted by rpurvis2733709.At the time I didn`t think it was relevant but now I do .The problem is I can`t find it again ! (I have others with `notes` at the bottom

I have a Jane Lorrain b 1789 m 1814 in Berwick ,Northumberland ,to a Samuel Purvis b 1794 .

They had 4 children all born in Berwick
Keteron b 1814
James 1817
William 1819
Samuel 1821

Samuel b1794 died in 1821 and is buried in Holy Trinity Churchyard, Berwick

Jane Lorrain then married a William Purves b 1788 Berwick -on -Tweed,Northumberland but can`t find a marriage date, but it must have been after 1821 .One or two of their children/grandchildren have Lorrain as their middle name

There was a bit of info at the bottom of the page regarding Jane and William either living in same house or next door , not sure which .Trying to prove it is Jane Lorrain who married William Purves, there is some doubt .William apparently married a Jane Robertson in 1810 in Berwick. William is buried in Berwick Civic Cem,and Jane Lorrain is named as his wife on headstone .

I have tried every combination of names etc ,but just can`t pick it up again .
Have they changed the format or am I missing somethng .
Would be grateful if anyone could have a look for me
Thanks

Occupation - Hermit?

vendredi 23 octobre 2015

I found this strange ad in the Hampshire Telegraph, 05 March 1821 on FindMyPast:

Quote:

Wants a situation, as a HERMIT, a young man, twenty-nine years of age; is willing to engage himself immediately. Direct (by letter, post-paid) to Thomas Glasby, at Mr. Coles, near the Gas Works, Southampton. Feb 28, 1821.
Now I think that this is my g3-grandfather. He was a cordwainer (boot-maker) and he married in Southampton in June of that year. My question is - who on earth would employ someone as a "hermit", and what would that situation involve? I know that a hermit is a recluse - originally a monk or similar member of a religious group. But surely you wouldn't need to advertise for a vacancy for this, you'd just go off to the local monastery and join up if that was your inclination? Did the word have a different connotation at the time?

Whatever the intent of this ad, it didn't seem to come to anything as Thomas remained as a cordwainer and went on to have 9 children. He did mysteriously disappear after 1841 though, so maybe I should start looking for him in some remote monastery somewhere?
Occupation - Hermit?

proof of marriage

I believe Andrew Skimming married Sarah Gibson sometime between 1900 and 1915 but can't find any proof. She had 2 sons out of wedlock with him but subsequently they got married (at least that's what I think happened). One son, - Hugh - stayed with his mother. The other one - William - was adopted by a relative of Sarah's. It's William's history I'm working on since he's my wife's father. Any help would be appreciated.

James Robertson, help please.

I am trying to help my s-i-l research her tree. One of the more tricky ones.
Her father George James Robertson 1925-1985, lost both his parents while he was in the army. His father James Robertson died in 1943 aged 67, in St. Peters Hospital Whitechapel. His mother Amy Elizabeth Robertson nee Gower was killed in 1944 aged 60, in a bombing raid in Watford. Prior to this the family address was Upper Tooting.
Its James Robertson's side that we are finding tricky.

James Robertson was born in 1875 in Edinburgh. By going back from the information that we have, he married Amy Gower in 1918 which would make him 43. (I would have thought he would have been married before.) There is a birth for a Helen M R Robertson mmn Gower in 1914. We cant find him, or anything that fits in the 1911.
1901 we think that we have him as a boarder in Lambeth occupation stated as a Commercial Agent. 1891 again we think he is a boarder in Fulham, occupation stated as a Civil Servant. In 1881 we have him with his parents James McIntosh Robertson and Catherine Robertson nee Hassock in Glasgow. James and Catherine moved with the family to Canada after 1901.
The queries are where is James in 1911 ? Was he married before ? Any other help would be amazing. I probably can't see the wood for the trees.
James Robertson, help please.

71st Regiment of Foot

Lost the thread of who was looking for a soldier c1806 in the 71st Regiment of Foot so will reply here.

The 71st Regiment of Foot became the Royal Highland Fusiliers - so it's possible your ancestor was Scottish. There's 4 soldiers in my tree from that Regiment but earliest didn't enlist until 1840. I do have a small book on the history of the Regiment somewhere.

Perhaps if you can look at the National Archives muster books or pay records you may find where he enlisted as a clue to where he was from.

Power cuts

There was a report the other day that power reductions in the near future may effect the performance of electrical items - sometimes I do have problems accessing the internet through technical issues their end or even my own computer playing up - but if these power reductions or cuts become a reality could it also cause corruption of data?

Although I do have my trees online - I also keep a paper copy so at least I have the information if the computer or internet sites crash or disappear.

Need some advice

Do I just give in? I have researched my father's family back to 1759 which I am 95% sure is correct with the help of certificates etc. Now reached a large brick wall.

On ancestry trees there are quite a few familytrees with my family going back to 1643, and the number of trees seem to be growing with the same information. I have contacted two of the owners, one admitted she had copied and the other could not remember where he had obtained his information.

My mother always said the Coole family came from Ireland, when and where from???? but my father visited Ireland looking at family graves in 1938. Should of asked more but as a child at the time I was not interested so only half listened. Did I hear wrong and maybe the tree owners are correct.

I have gone back to George Coole born 1759, married Elizabeth Austin in 1779. Although he married in Bristol, the parish being St Philip & Jacob, he may not even been born in Bristol let alone this country.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have Ancestry taken the 'fun' out of genealogy?

I am going through my tree at the moment looking for missing census for everyone. This is something I have done from time to time, and start with a known census and then work backwards or forwards.

Now, when I go to a census entry on Ancestry, I automatically get a list of possible census entries for other years, as well as BMD and parish records. Now you may think this is helpful, and although there are a lot of 'false positives' many of the links are correct.

However, I miss the 'thrill of the chase'. Working out the best way to search to find that awkward census return, entering known information in different combinations, and finally the sense of achievement when you find great uncle Fred's entry mistranscribed as Freda.

Where will it end? Will it eventually end up that you enter your name and get your whole tree delivered to you fully completed?
Have Ancestry taken the 'fun' out of genealogy?

Find my Past Subscription (UK not World) How much?

I have used Find My Past for a while now. I used to have a World subscription but reduced it to just the UK for the last year. I do not have automatic renewal. My subscription end on the 30th October and I have received an e-mail offering me 10% discount if I renew now. But without clicking on the Claim 10% discount I don't know how much it is going to cost me.

Does anyone please know what the annual subscription for UK membership costs please? How much can I expect to have to pay? I am in two minds about renewing because I don't research as much as I used to.

Would welcome your comments.

Rees Family Conundrum

My Great, Great Grandfather, Thomas Rees and Great,Great Grandmother Ann were born in Wales in 1811 and 1806 respectively. They married and lived in Machen in Monmouthshire. In the 1841 Census they were still living there with 4 children. In the 1851 Census, Ann is still living in Monmouthshire, and is now shown as a Widow living with 4 of her children. In the 1861 Census, she is still living there, but is shown as the wife of Thomas Rees, who it says was born in Birmingham. Living with them was a son. The birth date of Thomas matches the same birth date as Thomas who was born in Wales, this is the same in the 1871 Census. In all the posted Census Thomas is listed as a Haulier.

Can anyone make any suggestions as to how I might solve this riddle? How can Ann be married, then widowed, and then married again to what looks like the same man in 3 successive Census.

William Ward 1878 - 1923, Liverpool

William is my Maternal Grandfather. I have copies of several records for him, but there are still bits of his life - and death - which I cannot fathom!

I am hoping some of the great sleuths on this site can shed some light on one or two of these for me.

He was born William Ward on 22 Feb 1878; Baptised 10 Mar 1878 at St Sylvester's Liverpool. Parents: Thomas Ward, a Seaman, and Margaret Downey

1901 he is with his widowed mother, a Tobacco Stripper, in Leadenhall Street, and is himself a Driller in the shipyards.

22 July 1903 he married, using the name Francis Ward, a widow Ellen, formerly Dennison, born Corcoran. The Church was Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, Liverpool.
Ellen had a daughter, Margaret Annie Dennison (died 1970)

In 1909, on the birth of my Mother, Helen, he is an Iron Driller Journeyman, as he is in the census of 1911.

Here's where the mystery begins: on 7th September 1915 he is in Scotland Road signing on to join the Irish Guards, giving the information that he has already been in the Army - 4th King's Liverpool Regiment (V 13) T.E.
By the 9th September he is down in Caterham Surrey. I have a very old group photograph of soldiers, which my mother said included him, but she didn't know which one!

Then, in copy records from my late mother's effects, I found a copy of a marriage at the same church as before, of his marriage to Ellen, with his name now shown as William Francis - the copy is dated 1st October 1915, which leads me to believe has had to prove

More help needed with Eliza Hart born in all saints, hereford in c1826

Hi folks, Could anybody help with this lady. In 1841 she was living with her parents William Hart and Mary Ann in All Saints Hereford. In 1843 she had a son called William Augustus Hart, I have his birth certificate - sadly no father's name. In 1851 she was possibly living in Stoke Edith at Stoke House as a servant - a still room maid - only problem is she says she was born in Yarkhill,Hereford and not All Saints. In 1851 her son was with his grandparents in All Saints. I have looked for her on 1861,1871 and 1881 census with no success, also looked for a death for Eliza but cannot find one.

Any help would be much appreciated

Also looking for a marriage between William Hart b 1797 and Mary Ann b 1803.

Thank you for reading this.

Ada Harrison - an impenetrable brick wall

Hello,
This is my first post and I'm hoping someone will be able to offer advice on what seems to be an impenetrable brick wall:

Ada Harrison, nee Godwin was born in Berkshire in 1870. She seems to have gone into service, like her sisters, in London. In 1888 she somehow got herself across the Atlantic to marry a Maynard Harrison in Pennsylvania. She was just 17 but a copy of the marriage documents show she lied about her age and pretended to be 21.

She and Maynard had two sons, Richard and William. In 1897 the family returned to the UK, but the marriage already seemed to be in trouble. Then in 1907 Maynard returned to the US with William and from then on Ada referred to herself as a widow.

1928 found Ada again crossing the Atlantic, this time on her way to Mexico. Her son Richard was working for an oil company out there and his wife had just died, leaving him with two daughters. The 1930 US Census shows her still with Richard and his daughters in Mexico.

Shortly after this I picked them up crossing the border between Mexico and Texas, en route to visit a relative in Los Angeles. This is this last sighting I have of Ada. The !940 Census shows Richard and his younger daughter, also called Ada, resident in Texas. It shows they were also there in 1935. There is no trace of Ada senior anywhere on that census.

Neither is there any trace of her on the UK Incoming Passenger Lists. A relative, who has since died, believed she'd met Ada sometime in the 1930s in the UK. She also believed she'd been told of Ada's death in the early 1940s.

I would very much like to find out where and when she died but there are too many Ada Harrisons around the right age on the UK Death Index. I have no idea where she would have been living if she was in the UK. There's no permanent address for her after she returned with her family in 1897. On the 1901 and 1911 Censuses she was visiting other people on census night. She had family members in Berkshire and London, but that doesn't help. I feel she may have died in the US but have only limited access to their records. She had a relation in Los Angeles and her son in Texas, but I have no idea where else to look.

I really can't see the wood for the trees. Can anyone suggest any way round, or over, this brick wall.

FTM media files import process using photoshop lightroom

Using FTM 14 and photoshop lightroom here. My process for importing images into FTM is first to export the image from LR (lightroom) to a folder on the desktop. From there in FTM I select import media and navigate to the desktop folder from which I associate each picture with the individual. My question is once this is done can I send that desktop folder to the recycle bin without breaking any "links" between the picture and the source. I may have asked this before but forgot the answer.

Thanks

Help with my grandad: military and birth

vendredi 16 octobre 2015

Hello everyone:
following the discovery of some old family papers, I have a bit more information on my Irish granddad, and would like to take this further. Any tips on where to look are appreciated, I have already searched Ancestry without luck.

Name: James Joseph Dempsey
DOB: 16.07.1903 (taken from death certificate)
POB: Dublin, Ireland (as above)
I would love to find his birth record, and order the certificate. As far as I have been told, his mother was called Elizabeth Kirby/Kirkby and came from the North of England.
His father was Irish, named John.
I have a possible family in Dublin in 1911, although the mother isn't stated as English, so I'm not sure if this is them. I haven't found a marriage for them yet either.

On an old postcard to my granddad was the following information:
posted 12 Sept 1927, postmark Baile Atha Clait? (Gaellic), stamped Dublin,Eire
Addressed to J Dempsey
Indian Draft Depot
Royal Fusiliers
Hounslow
London

"Dear Jimmy
I am posting your clothes on now as I only got your letter this morning. Watch out for them. Send word when you're coming. Maryan is gone off since last Wednesday. No wedding"

Frustratingly, it is unsigned, so I have no idea if it is from his mother/father/sibling etc. There is also no clue who Maryan is (the spelling and punctuation isn't great, so this is quite possibly Mary Ann or Marian). On a side note, I would love to know her story :)

Anyway, back to the point. My granddad lived in Ireland but served with the British Army, he definitely went to India and he definitely contracted malaria. I don't know when he came out, but he signed back up during the second world war.

So, can anyone help me to:

A. Locate a birth and/or baptism record
(I have his marriage record thanks to this site)

B. Find out more about his army career

Thanks very much in advance

'Torkington' with Irish origins

I subscribe to the Ancestry site and have interrogated their Irish records to find details of Arthur Gordon Torkington's parents. I know Arthur was born in Dublin on 12th July 1885, his father was William Edward Torkington (born circa 1852 in Dublin). The civil registration of births index confirms Arthur's birth but it depicts 'Index only record' so I cannot ascertain any further information, ie mother's name etc.

Arthur joined the Royal Navy on 25th January 1904 and served on various vessels until 9th July 1924.

Arthur married on 6th August 1913 at Hambledon, Surrey. Arthur's marriage certificate shows his father, William Edward Torkington, as being a Barrack Sergeant but I am unable to find further details about his life.

Arthur died on 13th October 1947.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated .......

Where do I go from here?

Elizabeth Coole born approx 1868. In 1881 til her death in 1904, she was living in a Workhouse in Stapleton Bristol. On the 1891 census Elizabeth was described as a Epileptic, and on her death certificate it stated she died from a fit. I do have the death certificate but says little.

I visited the Bristol RO was not allowed to view the Workhouse admission book, but the man who worked at the RO said he would look for me which he did. A couple brought Elizabeth to the Workhouse in 1881 but left no name or details.

Can find nothing pre 1881, obtained one birth certificate for a Elizabeth Cole born 1867, the spelling of Coole does alter, father Michael, mother Elizabeth but she is still living at home in 1881.

Who were her parents? did she have any siblings? and mainly has she any connection to my family, which is Coole.

Any help would be appreciated

Spreadsheets?

Does anybody know if it is possible to add a spreadsheet into Ancestry?

I have transcribed a will with dozens of codicils and endowments of money and personal effects. To keep track of it all, as I was doing it, I put it in a spreadsheet. All nice and neat. Especially as he had numerous million Rupees.

I have found though that I can attach the will as a series of jpegs, but not the transcript thereof as a spreadsheet. Would it be better to convert the spreadsheet to a pdf and attach that, or to a Word document and paste the spreadsheet into that?

Anybody had a similar problem? Any thoughts?

Familysearch Christenings

Does anyone know how accurate the transcriptions of England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 on FamilySearch/Ancestry are? Normally I would look at the image, but these aren't available online.

I have a family from Walmer in Kent, but the 1901 census for that area is missing (physically missing, not just missing from the databases), so I have a 20 year period in which someone married, had 3(or maybe 4) children then was widowed. I am trying to fill in some blanks, but I can't find birth/christening/death records that match fully.

First of all in 1891 I have on RG12 Piece 739 Folio 84 Page 39:-

Mathew Meleady, Head, M, 45 Naval Pensioner and Fish Dealer, Middlesex London
Eliza Meleady, Wife, M, 32, Kent Walmer
Maud M Meleady, Daur, 13, Kent Walmer
Henry J Meleady, Son, 11, Kent Walmer
Francis M Meleady, Son, 9, Scholar, Scotland Edinburgh
Ellen M Meleady, Daur, 7, Scholar, Kent Walmer
May A Meleady, Daur, 5, Scholar, Kent Walmer
Elizabeth Meleady, Daur, 3, Kent Walmer
Kate Meleady, Daur, 1, Kent Walmer

Mathew dies q4 1910 then in 1911 RG14PN4574 RG78PN191 RD64 SD4 ED11 SN436:-

Eliza Meleady, Head, 52, Widow, Lower Walmer, Kent
Frank Meleady, Son, 28, Single, Coachman, Lower Walmer, Kent
Fred Meleady, Son, 18, Single, Carman, Lower Walmer, Kent
Elizabeth Meleady, Daughter, 22 Single, Laundry Maid, Lower Walmer, Kent
Maude Mace, Daughter, 33, Widow, Laundress, Lower Walmer, Kent
Maude Mace, Grandchild, 10, Lower Walmer Kent
Florrie Mace, Grandchild, 4, Lower Walmer Kent
Harry Mace, Grandchild, 1, Lower Walmer Kent.

I have found a marriage for Maud and Walter Mace Q2 1889 Medway, Kent with matching parish record on FamilySearch for 7 May 1898 in Luton, Kent (yes, there is a Luton in Kent as well as Bedfordshire!) and a birth for their daughter Maud Q1 1901 in Eastry, Kent.

Everything else I have found is a bit confused. There are baptisms for several Mace children in Kent, but the closest matches are the wrong dates, the wrong area (Medway) and for parents Wallace and Maud Mace. BMD records don't really fit either, and the only likely death I can find is also for Wallace.

There is also the distance between Walmer and Medway (around 50 miles) and the possible swapping back and forth over the 20 years.

So is he Walter or Wallace? Have some records have been mistranscribed or did he change his name?

PS I have everything pre 1891, it is just the 20 year period from 1891 to 1911 where there are gaps.

Richards of Wexford help please

Hi, my extended family are having a family get together next month, we have collectivly been collaborating on researching our grandfather's line. So far we have our g g grandfather Thomas Richards born Wexford about 1832 and arriving in Australia in 1853 age 21and married Mary Anne Walsh, his father is where we are stuck, we know his father is John Richards who married Eliza Rossiter. We can't get any further. We know that there are 3 independent lines of Richards in Wexford, it would be ideal to know which line we are descended from. Any information would be helpful.:o

samedi 10 octobre 2015

My great great grandmother born 1857 had 3 illegitimate children after her husband died in 1892 , twin girls in 1894 and a son in 1895 ,the father is named on all 3 Birth records , I have been trying now for a few years to narrow down exactly who he was as he isn't with her on any census records, somebody has her in his tree saying the childrens father was born in 1880 ? is this feasible as he would have been 14 when the twins were born ?

Thanks

Wray/kincaid- glasgow & donegal.

Can anyone help-I'm looking for descendants of my Gt. Grandparents Joseph Wray & Rebecca Kincaid (Donegal). Rebecca's father was Shelburn (Shelbourne) Kincaid and her mother was Jane Moore. Rebecca had a brother William who I think married Rose Anne Bone and they lived in Glasgow...one of their sons was also Shelburn. I'm trying to find anyone who may have knowledge/information on the families that could help in my family tree research.

Joseph & Rebecca appeared on 1901 Donegal Census but I can't find them anywhere in 1911 and I presume they had died. My grandpa(9) and his brother (12)were living with their older brother and his wife at 1911 but no mention of Joseph & Rebecca. I have the soldiers effects records of two of their sons (one of whom won the MM) and it shows Rebecca as being deceased prior to 1918 (date on Soldier Effects record but dates of death of both boys was 1915 in France & Flanders). Children of Joseph & Rebecca are:

Joseph Shelburn Wray b.30.09.1884 (married Gardiner), Margaret Ann Wray (Maggie- married Moore) b. 11.10.1887, Frances Wray (Fanny) b. 25.04.1890 (Emigrated to Canada married McNab), ****Mary Wray b. 17.03.1892 ****, Charles Henry Wray MM b. 05.09.1894 died France & Flanders, Emily Smith Wray b. 25.09.1896 (married Morrison), John Wray b. 10.07.1898 died France & Flanders, William Rankin Wray b. 30.11.1901 (grandpa) Re *** Mary*** I can find no information on her after 1911 but think she went into service with a family called McNiece in Donegal and she may have followed her sisters to Glasgow..

Re: Shelburn Kincaid/Jane Moore; Children are: William Kincaid b. abt 1855 (married Bone), Samuel Kincaid b. 01.06.1856 (married McElhinney ?), Rebecca (Jane) Kincaid baptised 28.04.1859 (married Wray), Robert Kincaid baptised 11.11.1861, Jane Kincaid b. 15.05.1865 (married Kielty or Kelly not clear on Soldier Effects record), John James Kincaid b. 09.04.1869.

I have war records, war diaries, census, Griffith Valuation records, certs etc., of some of the family members + the service record of William & RoseAnn's son Shelburn Kincaid (married Catherine Hughes) but I can't find birth, death of Joseph & death of Rebecca nor the same for Shelburn & Jane. I'm hoping someone will recognise some of these names in their tree and have information they could share.

(W.Landale posts re Robert Moore also part of this family tree as her Gt. Grandmother was my Grandpa's sister).

Thanks a lot

Thomas Forster b 1687 - d 1737 Goostrey-cum-Barnshaw, CHS

The above is my 7th GGF. I have gone further back quite a bit further but suspect it is incorrect!
The above chap's wife is unknown. He has one child Joseph b 1717 who married a Sarah Sharrett in 29 December 1735.
I have Thomas b 1687 -d1737 as the father of Joseph b 1717.

The problem is Thomas Forster's (b1687) father ...........who is he?
I think he may/and, more likely, may not be, Thomas b 1659 at Adderstone Hall, Lucker, Northumberland - he is an MP and Sherriff of Northumberland - his wife is a Frances Forster b1666 Bamburgh Castle - d1697 Westminster, London (her single name was apparently also Forster HER parents are unknown ). They had 3 sons and one daughter, the oldest son was eventually General Thomas Forster b1681 Bamburgh Castle - d1737 in France (in exile).
It goes back in the same vein ..........I feel I must have gone wrong somewhere and the above are not my line.
Can anyone help me please - my lot are peasants I am sure, not gentry! Bewildered! Sue

Dunne Family

jeudi 8 octobre 2015

Has anyone got any Certificates of a Dunne who lived at 156 Kilburn Park Road NW London ranging from 1946-1960's? Francis died 1946 and this was his home address. His widow Catherine later on re-married in 1951. (Marriage Cert.) Their son married a member of my family. I'm not sure how many children they had but I suspect they might have originated from Ireland! Looking to make a family connection.

Mengella family, Preston

Apologies in advance for the length of this post but here goes...
I am helping a friend who is relatively new to family history and we are focusing on this family. Neither of us has an ancestry sub currently so I can't post census links after 1881 - sorry - so a brief summary of anything anyone finds on ancestry would be helpful in the first instance. We can then follow up any ancestry links posted to this thread via Ancestry institution at the library next Tuesday. (I have a current FMP world sub due to expire around later this month)
I've tracked Vito and Mary Mengella (loads of name variants over the years - name seems to have settled as Mengella in the early 1900s) through all censuses 1881-1911 in Preston as below:

1881 at 15 Turks Head Yard, Preston
http://ift.tt/1JSkIoB

Transcribed as Vito Aningella, Mary Mengalla and on the next page Feolmeana Migella who is more than likely their daughter. I wonder if she might have been 8 months rather than 8 years as otherwise there is a big gap between her and the next child, plus see following censuses - either way, can't find a birth reg.

1891 at 7 Kirkham Street North, Preston
Veto and Mary Muncelli, plus children Minnie 11 (could this be Filomena/Philomena from above if 8 months theory is correct?), Sarah (Seraphina) 9, Daniel 7, Mary Teresa 3

1901 at 154 North Road, Preston
Vito and Mary Mungella, plus children Philomena 21, Seraphina 19, Daniel 17, Mary Teresa 14, John 9, Martha 7, (Mary) Madelina 5, Lewis (Louis) 2

1911 at 4 Brownlow Street, Preston
Mary Mengella (widow) - 14 children born alive, 7 living, 5 dead - maths not a strong point!) plus Mary Teresa 23, John 18, Martha, Madiline 14, Louis 11, Francis 5, plus granddaughter Mary Phyllis 10 months - I think she Mary Teresa's (illegitimate) daughter.

I have found assorted birth, marriage registrations etc for the children born in Preston but don't want to make this post any longer than it already is by detailing them here. Variant surnames for the birth registrations include Minghella, Minghello, Mengella, Mengila, Mungella.

Can anyone find:
Philomena's birth
Naturalisation for Vito
Marriage for Vito and Mary, possibly in Italy, Mary's maiden name, any info re where they were from in Italy - family lore says Naples, see also 1881 census record for where born, when they arrived in England
Missing children - I make it 9 via censuses but there were apparently 14 altogether according to 1911 census.

Any other info welcome, even if we already have it..my friend is interested in working forward as well as back.
Thanks,
Christine

Record Office: National Archives Kew : 1804 British Army Pay Muster Record

Hi everyone,

I live in Australia and would appreciated if some kind person would visit the National Archive in Kew and look up the 1804 Pay Muster for the 1/71st Regiment of Foot Ref: WO 12/7854 and look up the pay period 25th April to 24th May 1804.

My 5th Grand-father Cornelius Bonner was recruited into the British Army on the 22 May 1804 in Ireland under Captain Paley’s Company as a Private. He is recorded in the pay period of the 25th June to 24th July 1804 as recruited by Lieutenant Murray from Captain Forbes’s Company.

Need someone to look up the pay period 25th April to 24th May 1804 under Captain Forbes’s Company and see where Lieutenant Murray was recruiting. I would like a photo digital copy of this.

My ancestor remained in South America in 1806 and died in Uruguay in 1861. Therefore he never received the pension so unable to find out his place of birth in Ireland. By knowing the place he was recruited might give me a head start.

In return I can look up records here in Queensland, Australia.

Any help is much appreciated.

Missing children

dimanche 4 octobre 2015

Had rather a surprise this morning while looking at the copy of a original 1911 census.

Hannah Coole born 1848 Bristol, parents John and Eleanor Coole. In 1881 Hannah married David Beynon and they moved to Wales, either Swansea or Cardiff.

I believe David died in 1900 by drowning but need to order a certificate.

Hannah was back in Bristol by 1911 living at 94 Mina Rd, St Werburghs.

According to the 1911 census she had 2 children, still alive which I know nothing of.

Also having great problems in finding them in 1891. In 1901 Hannah is living at 10, Beresford Road,Cardiff but again cannot find her in the 1901 census,

Any help would be appreciated.

James Dodman 1853

I have found this James Dodman in an 1881 Eng. Census. James was born St. Mary, Newington, Surrey & is age 28, in this census.
James according to this census was born abt 1853. I have found a wife for James & I have their marriage license, but it is barely
readable. James was married to Martha Ann Fairclough also 28 yrs. of age, in same census. I believe James & Martha were married on/abt
May 18 1871/72, in the County of Surrey.

On same 1881 census James father only parent listed, is also James & is 64 yrs. of age. So birth est. 1817. Familysearch has a James Dodman born 12
Oct 1817, parents listed as William Dodman & Hannah ? I believe this William Dodman is the son of John Dodman & Alice Briant. Who are all in my family
tree. William was born 1780 East Rudham & in 1851 at age 71, lived in Little Massingham &, in 1861 at age 81, still lived in Little Massingham.

I have possible siblings for James 1817, they are...

Thomas - christened - 23 Feb 1813 - Massingham, Barva, Norwich ( No Clue what this means )
Thomas - " - 7 Apr 1814 - Little Massingham
Hannah - " - 15 Aug 1816 - " "
*James - " - 12 Oct 1817 - " "
Hannah - " - 2 Jul 1820 - " " ( unsure )
Thomas - " - 28 Dec 1822 - " " (unsure )

I have listed all these children because of the proximate date of James 1817 & that they were all born around same period. And in Little Massingham.

There are other William's & Hannah's listed on familysearch , William & Hannah Curtis can be ruled out, Hannah Curtis " is not in my family at all. "
There is also another William & Hannah ?, listed on familysearch but, their children born are later, mid 1848 - 1853, too late.

If this line-of-lineage I have created, is correct, my questions for this post are...
1. Can a maiden name be found for Hannah?
2. Can a marriage be found for William & Hannah?
3. Can any siblings for James 1853 be found?

Happy Hunting - Jeff

Line Counter/needlesize measure etc for knitters and crocheters

I have had, since my aunt died, the above object in a cabinet which I look at now again and wonder why I am keeping it. Anyone who sees it is intrigued and has never seen one like that before. Looks as though the front is some kind of copper.
First of all ............ it is old and it was my aunts (she was born 1904)
Secondly ............. she probably inherited it from someone else in the family so I ought to keep it.
WOW - a few days ago I was showing it to a visitor and after she had finished looking at it I took it back and in the light I could see that on the back there had been a label - quite large and it had been taken off - looking even more closely, I could see the name "Anderson" plus I am pretty sure I could see the name Rose and possibly Charlotte.
These were my Aunts, Aunts!
I would love to read what it all says although I think it is just names - would ultra violet light do it or does that have to be shone through from behind (this cannot be done because it is metal at the front).
I wondered about taking a gentle rubbing.
Any advice please. Sue

John Hope Farmer b1868 Edinburgh

Can anyone please find what happend to John Hope Farmer?

born 26 August 1868 in Edinburgh. son of Thomas Farmer and Barbara Hope.

In 1871 at Wardrops Court, Royal Mile, Edinburgh age 3
In 1881 still at Wardrops Court, Royal Mile Edinburgh, age 13 scholar

Since then nothing - I've looked at marriage and deaths in Scotland with no luck.

There's a possible emigration to Canada in 1888 - destination Hamilton, Ontario but gives an age of 21 not 19. I haven't found anything on the 1891 Canadian census.

He could have joined the Army like his father and uncle but not found anything.

He is one of those people you just want to know what happened to him.

Media importing work flow process questions

I need to wipe my HD due to viruses. I am using windows 7 and FTM 14. My workflow for importing photographs into FTM is to first create a folder on my desktop titled "pic's". I then export the photo's out of Lightroom to the pic folder. In FTM I import those pic's into the Media directory, folder, file or whatever it's called. From there I associate the individual photo's with the people. My question is, are the photo's in the media folder within FTM "links" to the photo's in Lightroom? or are they copies of the images that are actually within FTM? I have all the Lightroom pictures saved to EHD as well as all my FTM files. When I wipe the HD, install FTM and restore the files from the EHD will the pictures still be in their proper places or have I severed the link and have to re-import all the photo's from Lightroom to FTM. Maybe I've made this too complicated but I don't wish to have to re-import 300 pictures, unless I have to.

thanks,

brian

Page and missing person problem

Two problems -
1) I have searched and found Catherine Morley, nee Hickling, in 1881 but it seems to be linked to the wrong page and I can't find the right one. It comes up on page 41 but it says that it's on page 39. However, when I go back to page 39 (and 38) the family isn't there either. Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong please?

http://ift.tt/1Rmiq7t

2) I can't find her husband, who I suspect may be in prison. He is Levi Morley born 1861 Nottingham. I have looked under Levi and also L but can't seem to find him in 1881.

Update - you don't think he is mis-transcribed as the David Morley with her do you?

javaws.exe*32

My laptop has been getting slower and slower, has had loads of "not responding" episodes and some crashes. Looking at Task Manager, I seem to have hundreds of javaws.exe*32 in the list and the CPU is showing in between 90 and 100%.

Googling (very slowly!) seems to suggest that this is some kind of malware although my malwarebytes scan yesterday didn't spot it.

I haven't done a virus scan as I don't think it would manage to complete it on current capability.

Is there a safe, straightforward way for me to remove this, or would I be better advised to take it to my computer repair shop?
