Exciting find for the Northern Relic Hunters Metal Detecting Forum. They now need your help to reunite these dog tags with the families of the servicemen. They were found on a recent search in the North East!
Can you help with the search? These dog tags - which are thought to pre-date WW2 - were found near Richmond, (North Yorkshire).
Four sets of dog tags were found by Ian on his very first search. For the last few weeks, Ian has found out the following….
Major Ian Alister KENNEDY - Service Number 459280 (Intelligence Corps), Kings Own Border Regiment based at Humbleton Camp from 1959 onwards.
Lieutenant Colonel John Robert HODGES, OBE - Service Number 451264. He was later promoted to Major General, and served with the Kings Own Border Regiment too. Hodges was mentioned in the 1990 New Years Honours List.
Lieutenant Colonel W K BAZETT - Service Number 403386
Lieutenant Colonel D J MARTIN - Service Number 112896
The four were all highly ranked but how the tags came to be together is a mystery. Can you help Ian find these service men or their families? We would love the families to have this piece of their family history back.
PLEASE SHARE!

Mary Harben 1832-1915 & Hannah Harben 1836-1896, Tadlow, Cambs.

Could anyone please help to identify the maternal parentage of Hannah Harben and her sister (I believe) Mary Harben, my 2x great grandmothers from Tadlow, Cambridgeshire? I know Harben is the correct spelling; my late uncle was Edward Harben Sadler.

Mary and Hannah's parents' names were Edward Harben and his wife Sarah, but I'm uncertain of her surname. Ingrey, I had thought, but the names Hannah and Mary don't appear to fit in with their children's names. Ingrey is quoted in IGI records by a Harbon (sic) family member.

Mary married William Parish in 1858 and Hannah married Solomon Sadler in 1860 (Caxton, Cambs).

I haven't been able to find Mary nor Hannah's birth certificates online and will need to check further with the GRO... but I don't have exact details about either, regarding exact dates or parentage to ensure I'd get the right certificates.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated. With many thanks.

1939 register - marked as "Adopted"

This came as a surprise - well not a complete surprise as I knew she was adopted, just that it was marked as such. My family always called her by her birth name (she is in my mum's birthday book on the correct birthdate) but she is on the register with the name given by her by the lady who adopted her.

The actual note reads ADOPTION EGA

Should add that this lady died in 1990.

Who was Elizabeth Bockin?

On the 1939 Register Frank Brown in Nottingham is sharing his house with his Housekeeper, Elizabeth Bockin. She was born on 8 Apr 1871 and both are single. I think she might be Sarah Elizabeth Bockin b. Jun Q 1871 in Grantham, Lincs.

Trying to trace Sarah Elizabeth is proving very difficult - I have found her in the 1881, but nowhere else until 1939. She dies, still in Nottingham in Sep Q1952 as Sarah E Bockin, dob approx 1874.

In the 1911 census however, Frank Brown is living with his wife Lizzie in Nottingham, but with very few details entered, I cannot work out who this Elizabeth is, and have not been able to find a marriage that would fit.

Is it possible that the Lizzie of 1911 is the same Elizabeth in 1939 and also the same Sarah Elizabeth. Can anyone find any other trace of Sarah Elizabeth that would prove/disprove this theory. Also, how likely would it be that a painter/decorator would have a housekeeper especially as in the early 30's he was on the dole and had no money at all - surely if he was single with no money he would have been more likely to be a boarder somewhere?

Irish Roots

Trying to find out more about my possible great-grandfather Frank Cunningham. From what I can gather, he was born in Ireland on December 2, 1881 (according to his WWI draft card) , came to Philadelphia from Ireland in 1900, and by 1910 he was in the census with a wife, Mary, and daughter, Anna. His wife died July 4, 1925 according to the snippet I can see from her death record on ancestry (membership expired) Also from this snippet I can see a William Gallagher..I believe that is her father so Frank`s wifes full name was Mary Gallagher Cunningham. They lived on Ellsworth Street, and I can find him in every census until 1940, but no other sorts of documents. I am looking for any death records, or anything on his parents, basically anything other then census records, because I cannot find anything else.

Thank you!

1911 Canada census help, please

lundi 22 février 2016

familysearch.org has a 1911 census transcription (no image) for Arthur Abel, born England Nov 1883, single, lodger, resident in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

http://ift.tt/1RjhLnY

I am trying to find the image on the Libraries & Archives Canada site, but with no success.

I find the site picky and precise, with no error margins. So if anyone has time to do a look up for Arthur on a third site and let me know District name, District number. sub district name & number and page number, hopefully I will be able to enter these on the search page of the Canada site (without using any names)and call up the image.

No big problem as it can go onto the "library list" for a look up on Thursday, I just get impatient!

Lost in 1871

I'm struggling to find a whole family on the 1871 census.

William Charles Trowbridge/Troubridge, b. 1843 Motcombe, Dorset
wife,
Eliza, b. 1843 Taunton Somerset
children,
George Frederick b. 1866 Gillingham Dorset
Albert E, b. 1868 Maiden Bradley, Wilts
Ernest Herbert b. 1870 Bourton Dorset

the next child, Charlotte Nellie Harriet was b. 1871 in Pontypridd, so they could be in Dorset, or already have moved to Pontypridd, or they could be somewhere in between. But wherever they are, I can't find 'em!

William and Eliza married in Bourton in 1863. In 1881, the family is in Burton on Trent. By 1891, William is a widower still in Burton on Trent; he marries again in 1893 and has a second family.

On a subsequent census, Ernest is listed as Herbert, and Charlotte as Nellie, so there's a family tendency for [some of] the children to be known by their second given name. Tried everything I can think of, but they still elude me, and I can't bear the irregularity of having all of them missing for a whole census.

Any help would be v.much appreciated.

Thanks

Ancestry; really ridiculous tree

Just had to share this!

Looking at my Barratts (aka Barretts) I have some parts of my tree I am really not sure about. A lot of similar names with similar dates of birth in East London. Whilst I have been looking at records on Ancestry, I have seen a lot with corrections attached to them that would make my tree very wrong and I had started to doubt my research. I have traced most of the corrections back to this very wrong tree. It looks like the tree owner has attached every Barratt she could find!

Henry John Barratt 1819-1886, born and died in Staffordshire and had 3 wives.

The first, Marina Johnson 1821-1891, he had 44 :shocked7fl: (that isn't a typo!) children with from 1828 to 1870. These included my Barratts who were all born in London as well as some from all over the UK

The second, Elizabeth Barratt 1816-1883 he had 8 children with from 1846 to 1860

Finally Unknown who he had 3 with from 1849 to 1862.

He also appears (according to this tree owner) on 7 1851 censuses, 8 1861 censuses, 6 1871 censuses, 4 1881 censuses, as well as appearing on the 1891 and 1901 after he died!

Also there are 65,588 people in this tree :rotfl:

Adelaide Barnett Wilson (later Donovan and Milton)

Apologies for length but this is everything I know about Adelaide Barnett Wilson before juddering to a complete halt in 1876.
Born 6 Jul 1848 according to baptism record. Birth registered Jul-Sep 1848 Bethnal Green

1851 census Bethnal Green

1855 baptised on same day as her sister Jane at St Simon Zelotes, Bethnal Green

1861 census Bethnal Green
http://ift.tt/20OgSWZ
http://ift.tt/20OgSX3

1870 - aged 22, at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, she marries Thomas Donovan, gentleman, aged 50 according to marriage record, but 60 according to census the following year.
http://ift.tt/20OgSX5
http://ift.tt/20OgSX9

They have three daughters. Thomas is recorded as a commission agent on their baptism records.

1871 census - in Lambeth, with Thomas and first daughter Chrissy
http://ift.tt/20OgRm4
http://ift.tt/20OgRm6

Chrissy's baptism record gives her full name as Chrissy Elizabeth Wilson Donovan. (She has an aunt Christian Elizabeth Wilson after whom she is presumably named.)
Chrissy and second daughter Adelaide Maude Donovan (birth reg Apr-Jun 1872 Hackney) are both baptised on 9 Aug 1874 at St Matthias, Stoke Newington.
A third daughter Maria Maude Mary Donovan (birth reg Oct-Dec 1874 Edmonton) is baptised same church on 8 Nov 1874.

1876 Adelaide, now widowed, marries William Milton, grocer, on 20 Feb 1876 at St James the Great, Bethnal Green,

http://ift.tt/20OgRm6

After that, I can't find any trace whatsoever of Adelaide and second husband and the 3 daughters from her first marriage, nor find a birth reg for Chrissy. Nor have I pinned down a death reg for Thomas.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Christine

A little mystery

Hiya guys, I'm not sure if many of you remember but I have an Elizabeth Phillips born on 27th March 1887 in Stockton-On-Tees that I could never find after 1911. Well I used her first name & birthday on the 1939 to narrow down possibly matches against locations as well as trying the Phillips bit and in both searches I came up with a record.

Hindson Household
Elizabeth Hodgson (Phillips) is single & a paid house keeper in Middlesbrough which is Stockton's neighbour.

I myself haven't been able to match any further records after this so is there a possibility that there's an in-correction somewhere?

Children who died but not on any Census.

samedi 20 février 2016

Hi everyone!

On my great grandfathers 1911 census record in column eight and nine it shows two children still living and two who died. On all of the previous census records from the time of his marriage only the two living children were shown. Is there any way of finding the records of the two that died?

Thanks Malcolm.

Investigating SSDI

Back again with more information about my long lost grandfather, James Joseph Cunningham. I know VERY little, and anything would help. Here is what I know.

Name was James Joseph Cunningham, or Joseph James Cunningham.
He was 23 in January of 1941, so he was born about 1917.
Born and most likely raised in the Philadelphia/Greater Philadelphia Area.
May have lived close to Dudley Street in Philadelphia.

I only know this information from his daughters birth certificate, that says that on January 29, 1941, James Joseph Cunningham was 23 and born in Philadelphia County.

He cut all contact after the birth, and after browsing census records forever, I have no matches.

I just started to switch his name around, looking for Joseph J, Joseph, James, and James J Cunninghams. There is only 1 SSDI match.

SSDI yields one match....
63
Given Name Joseph
Surname Cunningham
Birth Date 03 Jun 1917
State Pennsylvania
Last Place of Residence Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Previous Residence Postal Code 19141
Event Date Aug 1980

I am trying to figure out how to find out more about this person from what is in the SSDI above.

Any help would be extremely helpful....I need to solve this mystery!

Thank you!

Does anyone know how much detail this record might show?? I haven't got a Ancestry sub at present - just FMP - and don't want to fork out somewhere between £10 and £20 for something that might just repeat what the index says. Can anyone who has a sub let me know what I might expect??

Many thanks,

In the early hours of Tuesday morning I asked for about 30 households to be opened (all in the same street) but have only had 2 of the requests acknowledged.

Now do I wait and see what happens (if so for how long?) or do I re-ask for all those other households to be opened.

Was it a glitch or is it just a long queue?

Genealogy's Star - Are there genealogical catfish and what do we do about them?

Closed records on 1939 Register

I hadn't looked at the 1939 register before today, as I knew where my grandparents (and the great grandparents who were still alive at that time) were living.
So today out of curiosity I looked at my mother's family. Grandparents and Grandmother's mother - as expected. There are six closed records. Mum was one of eight children and the oldest died in 1930, so there should be seven children still at home. Six of those children were under 15 in 1939 , the seventh would have been 17 and as she died in 1942 her record should be open. One of the others was killed during the war (although he is probably listed as missing in action and doesn't have an official death certificate)
It looks as though one of the children was not at home on that day, but I can't think of a way to check. The most likely one being the oldest surviving child as she could have been in hospital.
I have tried searches , but all searches on variations of her name are coming up blank.
Her death is registered in Amounderness, she was in hospital and died as a result of having a faulty heart valve.

So do I ask if those two records are closed and can they be opened?

Lack of computer knowledge!

My knowledge of computers is zilch and I apologise - I just use it and hope!
I have in the last few months changed to Firefox which I am very happy with. I am on windows 7 and do not intend to upgrade to 10 - I have noticed there seem to be problems particularly with Windows 7 - nothing wrong with computer the way it is - well not much anyway.
I noticed that my short cuts disappeared and became "card games"!
I have just had a good look at the computer and found my copy Gedcoms for ancestry.co.uk Trees (4 Trees dated November 2015 in recycle bin).
I think they are probably OK and I am assuming I could upload them to FMP (which I have never used before) thus avoiding using ancestry with its new americanised mess! Is this so?
I notice some of my files are in a "bin" as MHTLs or similar. Can I channge them back to usable files. The Gedcoms are included in the files that have changed type. How would I do this?
(Would be grateful for replies consisting of words not larger than 2 syllables since it will be technical!:o)

I also, a couple of months ago had a mishap with a cup of tea - I did pick up keyboard (I use a plug in keyboard as cannot touch type on laptop flat keyboard - I also have a separate screen to make it viewable!) and gave it a good shake - all is well except for a sticky "n" - I know I can take the top of the key off and clean it but the problem is further inside the keyboard I suspect - any advice please.

1939 register download problem

I've just looking at entries for 1939 that my FMP sub now allows me to see - they are taking a long time to download then when I try to view them in the file where I've saved them I get the message "We can't open this file" - has anyone else got this problem?

Opinions please on the folio number for the probate of Thomas Edward Compton. There isn't one on the Ancestry probates, but it's there on the government site

Folio number

Ancestry: New South Wales, Australia, Police Gazettes, 1854-1930

This list shows a record for Effie Macleod, dated 22 Jan 1930, in Sydney NSW - desertion.

Does anyone know how much detail this record might show?? I haven't got a Ancestry sub at present - just FMP - and don't want to fork out somewhere between £10 and £20 for something that might just repeat what the index says. Can anyone who has a sub let me know what I might expect??

Many thanks,

Can anyone please help me work out which regiment's war diary I need to try and find?

Hi

I offered to help a relative find out about her grandfather and his brother in WW1. They were in the same tank when her granddad's brother was killed but she has no further information. I have never ventured into researching the military exploits of my relatives so it is all a bit confusing to me. I spent a fair part of this weekend looking at websites and I am none the wiser, so thought I would call in the experts! (I know that there are specialist websites so perhaps someone can point me in the right direction please).

Anyway, I have found his details on the CWGC:

OUSELEY, J E

Rank: Lance Corporal

Service No: 200926

Date of Death: 09/10/1917

Regiment/Service: Tank Corps

"D" Bn.

Grave Reference: VIII. G. 4.

Cemetery: DOZINGHEM MILITARY CEMETERY

I also found a document saying "Royal Fusiliers". Can anyone help please?!
Can anyone please help me work out which regiment's war diary I need to try and find?

Marriage bonds and allegations

John Jackson (3xGG) born in Chorley 1794 parents Ralph & Mary Fisher. I have found a marriage in Chorley for a marriage 19/12/1784 which fits, Ralph is an Innkeeper and a widow so I have been trying to find a previous marriage for him in Chorley but drawn a blank.

Then I found this Marriage Bond
ENGLAND, CHESHIRE, MARRIAGE BONDS AND ALLEGATIONS, 1606-1900
Name Ralph Jackson Event Type Intended marriage
Event Date 18 Dec 1784 - Event Place Cheshire, England
Gender Male - Age 21 - Spouse's Name Mary Fisher - Spouse's Age 21

Is this him and does that mean that Ralph didn't live in Chorley or was it Mary? The bond was taken out in Cheshire but they married in Chorley 1 day later, if it is the same persons. I don't know much about bonds except they were probably in a rush to marry. I cannot find a previous marriage in Cheshire for him so I have hit a brick wall.

I have also found a website that refers to a Ralph Jackson being an Innkeeper, would there be any recorded information anywhere that I could look at?
"The Jackson's Arms was first recorded on the 1881 census but it is likely that there was an Inn on this site as far back as 1793 when a Ralph Jackson was recorded as an Innkeeper in Chorley"

Hey,

would anyone have any idea what details are included within these records?
I have the Baptism of Nicholas Phillips born in 1794 which says his father Robert was a "Militia man"
There's a record on the Durham Records website for the certificate and I may have found matching Military records but I just wondered what was on these certificates before I paid for them.

Thanks

? Reserved Occupation WW2

I am trying to add a bit more about my dad George Brown to my tree. He was born in 1921 and joined the RAF police on 27/09/1945 when he was nearly 24. To me this seems quite old to go into a service when there has been a war on. The only thing that I can think of was that he had a reserved occupation. On the form I have from the RAF it says his civil occupation was App.Acetylene Welder and the employer was Ind.GP.044.22.Dis 190.
Can anyone shine any light on this or point me in the right direction

Thank you

Software for transcrbing and displaying old handwritten documents

I have a lot of old handwritten documents relating to my ancestors. I am looking for the best way of transcribing these. Ideally I would like to add to a scan of the document, searchable and copyable text, with each word correctly located on top of the handwritten word in the scan (a bit like Google Books does it). Is there software that will create such documents for me? I believe that PDF files can contain multiple layers, so it should in theory be possible to add a text layer to the scan. But whether it is easily possible to position the typed word over the hand written word, I doubt. For clarify, I am not looking for OCR, which will not be possible with these old letters. I will manually transcribe the documents. But I am looking for a productive way of doing this, and of displaying the results.

Thanks - Rowan

John Brett Roscorla

Hi All,

First time poster here, and first time family tree researcher on Ancestry.

I'm having a real tough time researching my mother' side of the family. I have her, her father John Brett Roscorla (Died in 1975) and her mother Janet Clarke (born: abt 1953) and her mother Gladys Smith (1922 - 1987) and Janet' father William E Clarke (B: abt 1920)

However, the trouble i'm having is finding anything on Mr Roscorla. He married my maternal grandmother in 1970 in Birmingham, Warwickshire at the age of 17, and he died on 5th August 1975 (it weird' me out that he died on the day of my birth, 13 years prior.) Looking at his death record i've got the following information;

Name: John Brett Roscorla
Born on: 26th January 1953
Born in: England (no further information available)
Died on: 5th August 1975
Died in: Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham
Cause of death: chest injury with infra thoracic haemorrhage

Maiden name of woman who has married? -------
name and surname of informant: certificate received from Cecil Cudworth asst. dep. coroner for west midlands inquest held on 16th September 1975

Its threw a spanner in my works, and it's awfully confusing

Any help, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks in advance :)

I have come across a public tree on Ancestry that has my family included in it, complete with many details. Now as is obvious I am still alive together with quite a few of the family, and the Ancestry member has not marked them as private.

Census Trouble

I am back on the trail of my ever so elusive grandfather, James Joseph Cunningham. Here is what I know, per his daughters birth certificate.

FATHER
JAMES JOSEPH CUNNINGHAM
AGED 23 (as of January 29, 1941)
PLACE OF BIRTH - PHILADELPHIA COUNTY

Yep, that`s it.

I have searched 1920, 1930, and 1940 censuses with no avail, even under the names James Cunningham, James J Cunningham, Joseph Cunningham, and Joseph J Cunningham, in Philadelphia and Philadelphia county

He had a daughter with Leona Fennessy in early 1941 and was never heard from after.

Here is where I know Leona was living through the years.
1930- Tasker Street, Philly
1933- Dudley Street, Philly
1950- Pierce Street (presumed, on fathers death cert) Philly

Any help searching the censuses or anywhere else would be much appreciated! Thank you!

kathleen in nottingham

hello folks.....dropping by when I can:o I'm looking for a Kathleen Asher of Nottingham. Asher was her unmarried surname & I know that, after marriage, she had a daughter who would now be in her 50s (Kathleen is definitely dead & I don't know her married name). I've been told she lived on a Victoria Road/Street/Avenue. I've found a couple of Kathleen Ashers in Nottm, but they don't seem to fit & several more Cathryn Ashers (maybe she preferred the name Kathleen) Must be missing somethiing. I want to find out who her parents were, so that I can try to see if she fits in with one of my families.

Thanks

That Annie Phillips Again

Hi, it's been a long time I know. Anyway I went to finally fill out the form for the death of the twin Annie Phillips. I thought she had died in 1934, Stockton as an unmarried woman but it turns out the record was for a married woman. So it's back to the drawing board of narrowing down the last record for Annie. The last one I personally have is the workhouse 1911 census in Durham so rather than searching for Stockton I'm sticking to Durham instead and there's a possible record. In 1917 there's an Easington marriage of an Annie Phillips & Henry Webb. I've found his death in 1932 which led to the birth in 1874 so I'm hoping that if we found the death of the Annie Webb we'd find a birth year and hopefully it might match for my Annie but sadly I can't find the death or a re-marriage. Would anyone like to please help with this?

His other siblings on that census would be - Maria at 16 yrs -Thomas 12 - Caroline 11

He married on 4/3/1882 so he was still single in 1881 aged 22 yrs

Ancestry FTM Update email

mardi 2 février 2016

I have just received an email from Ancestry addressed to all FTM Users saying that they have listened to our concerns and that MacKiev will be taking over the running of FTM for both Mac and PC users. They are also providing a link which will let RootsMagic link with Ancestry Search. Do you think they decided that they under estimated the users feelings, and it could cost them?

Genealogy's Star - Ancestry Announces Family Tree Maker Solution

FTM News from Ancestry

Just received e-mail this from Ancestry

"Dear Family Tree Maker™ community,

Since our Family Tree Maker announcement last December, we have continued to actively explore ways to develop and support Family Tree Maker and ensure you have choices to preserve your work in ways that matter to you.

Today, we are pleased to announce two options for desktop software that will work with Ancestry.

Software MacKiev

Software MacKiev, with whom we have a long-standing relationship, is acquiring the Family Tree Maker software line as publisher for both Mac and Windows versions. Software MacKiev has been the developer of Family Tree Maker for Mac for more than six years and is thrilled at the opportunity to publish future versions of Family Tree Maker for Mac and Windows.

This new agreement means you will receive software updates and new versions from Software MacKiev, and have the ability to purchase new versions of Family Tree Maker from Software MacKiev as they are released. You will have continued access to Ancestry Hints, Ancestry searches, and be able to save your tree on Ancestry with Family Tree Maker moving forward.

RootsMagic

We have made an agreement with RootsMagic, a leading genealogy desktop software program publisher, to connect Ancestry with the RootsMagic software by the end of 2016. With this new relationship, RootsMagic can serve as your desktop family tree software, while having access to Ancestry hints, Ancestry searches, and the ability to save your tree on Ancestry.

We have heard your concerns and are working to provide the solutions you requested. These new agreements will make it possible to preserve your work on Ancestry and Family Tree Maker and enable future features and benefits to help you discover your family history. Be assured that Ancestry, in cooperation with Software MacKiev and RootsMagic, will continue to support you as you discover your family history.

We ask for your patience as we work diligently through all the details to make these solutions available. You can find additional details about these Family Tree Maker partnerships on our blog. We also encourage you to continue to check back on our blog for future updates in the coming months."

Enlightened marriage certificate from 1850 -

or spiteful vicar?

I've just embarked on OH's tree - and back in the 1800s from his paternal grandfather's side they all came from Winchcomb(e) in Gloucestershire until the 1880s when the agricultural jobs started to disappear and they came over to Wales to become miners. Anyway I digress.

I have found the marriage of OH's 2xGt Grandfather George Marshall to Rosina Lane on 13 Feb 1850 in Winchcomb(e) parish church. I can't post the link as my Ancestry sub has expired but I'd be interested in people's opinion on why it was done - it might also be a very strong willed woman! I've never come across this before - has anybody else?

Married by Licence

lundi 1 février 2016

I have been interested to read the threads about marriage by certificate, license etc. My grandparents were married by license and I wondered if these documents would still exist and if so how would I go about getting a copy?

Many thanks for any help

Trying to find a newspaper article on a fatal bombing in Sidcup

Hi

I have FMP and, with it, the British Newspapers 1710-1953 record set.

My 2nd great aunt, Elizabeth Eliza Deamer, aged 39, and her 2 children - Eric, 13, and daughter Iris Daphne, aged 9 - were killed on 8 Feb 1945 at their home in 6 Berwick Crescent, Days Lane, Sidcup.

They are listed on WW2 Civilian deaths and I have their burial cards but wondered if there was an article about the bomb. But I can't find anything at all. Were home bombings not reported (possible, I guess)? Or am I just not looking properly?

Thanks
