Sarah is 18 in St Giles Norwich ref Piece number 788

She seems to be in some kind of institution - possibly a school? Can anyone make it out and suggest what she might be doing there. 20 years later she is an unmarried housemaid so I doubt she was educated to age 18.

I hope this makes sense to someone.

A while ago I swapped from IE to Google Chrome as my IE was not compatible with Ancestry website. This morning my Google home page has a message to say that there will be no more Google Chrome updates 'soon' as it no longer supports Windows XP or Vista (my OS).

Can you suggest what my next step should be (short of buying a new PC!)

Ever posted a photo request on Findagrave website?

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has ever posted a photo request on the Findagrave website and was their request successful? I posted a request for photos of 2 headstones 2 and half months ago, but not a word back since then. When I first posted, I got a reply along the lines of...... welcome, your request has been sent to the (geographically) nearest 500 members of Findagrave. I thought, happy days,but maybe not.
The names of the deceased whose headstone photos I requested are already recorded on Findagrave.

Thanks.
Paul.

Harron Family in Ireland 1700s-1800s

Over a long and winding road, I have locked in on a group of Harron ancestors and found satisfactory evidence.

The path leads up to a family of Harrons in Ireland (in Donegal, and possibly some time in Antrim), most of whom emigrated to the United States and Canada.

I have the names of much of the group of siblings that make up this family.

William Harron/Herron (married Nancy or Ann) (left Ireland around 1846 I think)
Mary (emigrated around the same time as William, 1846ish)
Andrew Harron (married Margaret Kincaid / Kincade) (born c.1794)
Robert Harron (moved to Philadelphia)
Martha
Catherine

They are all mentioned in a letter from Andrew to Robert, sent just before Andrew Left Ireland with his family in 1847.

Nothing I have identifies their parents who raised them in Ireland, though MANY public trees point to the same two people.

Several people making their own trees seem rather confident that the parents are Patrick Harron/Herron (1750-1806) and Mary Spence (1756-1843).

I would like to find at least some document or registration or census or other form of evidence that links these names together as a group.

I haven't yet found anything.

1939 Register

Hi

I have downloaded the 1939 register for a family I am researching and for the daughter she has written above her name the surname O'dwyer and a date 12.9.61. Do you think this date is the date of marriage or just the date that they changed the name. This is the first 1939 record I have looked at So nothing to compare against

Unless I'm being a dweeb (which is entirely possible) it appears Ancestry has changed their policy about access to your trees when your membership has lapsed. Yesterday I was working away fine and this morning my membership has finished and I can't see a dickie - I've logged in but the only page I'm getting is the options for renewal. Previously I thought I could still see my trees just not see any records.........

Websites for German Genealogy?

Hello everyone,

I have been stuck at a brick wall with my maternal side of the family for a long while now. It seems I have tried contacting every living relitave of this person and have scowered the internet, with no results other than what I already had. I am specifically looking for Max Heilmann born 1879 likely around the area of Gera and Louisa (Magdeline Henrietta) Lohsack born around 1877 in the same area (New Debschwitz?) I was wondering if anyone could give any advice as to how to get information on their parents? I have also heard that services will look in Germany for birth records for you but require money, is this a good option? If so what are some recommendations?

Thanks, Jack

Canadian Expeditionary Force - service papers

I may have missed this if it's been mentioned before, but for anyone who had ancestors in the Canadian Expeditionary Force you might like to check to see if their service papers are available. Apparently they are part way through the digitisation project so you may need to keep checking back if they are not available at the moment.

http://ift.tt/200VYc1
If you go to the website and click on SEARCH DATABASE, then search by name, when the image of the Attestation papers is shown you may see to the right a link to the digitised service file (pdf format) as shown in the image below.

I found a very interesting one yesterday (34 pages), although two others I looked for have not yet been digitised.

maria butler-rethink

with the free weekend at findmypast I was just relooking at the evidence on my Maria BUTLER. The 1939 register gives me her birth date as 15th january 1870, she always claims birth place as woolwich. Never have found her in 1871 or her birth registration. I was just relooking at the maria butler at hampstead on 1871 as this one is crossed out and reentered and this one ties in with mine because she has a brother charles butler b 1867 and fathers name is william. this maria is the one that married SHURETY and is on 1891 census with her daughter and the butler family so I am once again eliminating this one. There is a birth of an ann maria butler at greenwich in the first quarter of 1870. Curious if this could be my missing link.
My maria butler married William Pearson so appears in northfleet in 1891.
aaaaaaaaaargh!!!!!!!!!!
I think the only thing left is for me to hunt down the minutes of the meetings for the sutton district school where maria and charles were admitted, but its a matter of finding the time to get there and do the searching.

Broadmoor 1863

samedi 23 janvier 2016

My GGG Grandfather Samuel Gilbert born 1809 Clawton, Devon moved to Devonport (now part of Plymouth) Devon around 1851 was sent to Prison in Devonport in 1861 and moved to Pentonville, Millbank and Portland Prisons according to Find My Past records the last place he was moved to was Broadmoor April 1863. According to Broadmoor history the first female patients moved in on 27th May 1863 does anyone know why a male prisoner would be moved there before the first patients as far as I know he was of sound mind it doesn't say anything to the contrary in his records? I don't know if I will be able to find prison records from that time? I have just emailed Berkshire Record Office to see if they hold any information. Any help would be appreciated as he was my brickwall for years and now I have hit another one.

Who was Guilame Lafayette and why can I only find him in the 1851 census?

Hi

I have been researching a different branch of my tree lately and have been looking around the various siblings as they are often named as witnesses at each other's marriages, etc. My direct relation is Virginia Betsey Bessell (b. 1822, Finsbury, London). Her life has been easy to trace on ancestry, she married Edward Henry Root in 1846 at St Pancras and by 1851 had crossed the river to Southwark where her husband had a eel pie shop.

So, I looked at her sister Edwenia Hance Bessell who married Robert Sargeant in 1840 at Holborn. He became a school master (earlier listed as a watchmaker?) and moved to Otford Kent. So, I have found them in the 1851 census and they have a 7 year old nephew "Guilame Lafayette" with them. Apparently he was born in Southwark. This is written, not ditto'd in.

BUT I cannot find any Guiliame Lafayette born in the UK, let alone Southwark (or variations in spelling).

Does anyone fancy a search? What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for any help you can give! I have to say, I have not found any French connections in either side so far....
Who was Guilame Lafayette and why can I only find him in the 1851 census?

Where should I be looking?

I need help with MRS Constance Creasey please, post her presumed marriage in 1918.

Constance was born in 1891 in Ely, Cambs, where her father Edmund Serjeant Boulter taught at the choir school. I have her bp & school attendance records & have also traced her in Ely census in 1901 & again in 1911, when she was recorded as a school teacher. So, please don't waste any of your precious time on Constance's early life.

I haven't got the cert (she is only a distant twig) but there is a GRO marriage for Constance Boulter & Frederic G Creasey Q1 1918, Ely reg Dist. I'm pretty sure this will be my Constance because of the location.

I can't find any references for either of them after the marriage. :

Constance's younger sister (teacher at the choir school) Winifred sailed to the US in April 1922 & married there 10 days later. I've found her & her husband in 1930 census, but not in 1940 - They may have returned to England by then??
Two of the girls' brothers were in Arizona in 1916, so I'm wondering if the Creaseys eventually went there too?

Thanks for reading and any help gratefully received.

Jay

James George - head - widower - 41 - carpenter - Middlesex, London *page before
John Walter George - son - 14 - employ*** Carman - Middlesex, London
Walter George- son - 11 - scholar - Middlesex, London
James Arthur George - son - 9 - scholar - Middlesex, London

Then we have

http://ift.tt/1necLGN

23 Roberts Place, Mile end old town, London

James George - head - widower - 39 - carpenter - Bethnal green, Middx
John Walter " - son - unmar - 15 - Carman - Stepney, Middx
William " - son - unmar - 11 - scholar - Stepney, Middx

Freedom of Information Act

Can you find where a person is living in the 1939 Register under the FOI act. She would now be about 97-98 years of age if still living.

If so what information do you have to provide?

How realistic can we be of getting a result?

Unfortunately we only have an approximate dob - with many possibilities narrowed down to 6 good ones but only 3 death registrations (1 deaths certificate obtained so far).

We've had two closed households opened up but no-one of her name is living there.

Can we get a result using the FOI or would it be better to keep getting different households opened up until we find one with a lady of the right name living there? Then using any death certificates to try and match the date of birth to open it up.

All we really want is her dob so that we know who she is from a large database of ladies with same name.

Help needed, with my thoughts

Hi

I need some help in getting my thoughts straight as to the right way to go please? I am searching for my Uncles wife, Eliza Dyer, nee Waller. I believe she was born in 1912, as suggested by the 1939 register in I think the St Pancras area of London. They married and I think moved possibly to the Cheshire area, however, I cannot find a death for her Any suggestions as to how to move forward with this?

Thank you

Help with a Grave Marker

Hello. I'm new to these forums but glad to find. I have a grave marker rubbing. It's framed and quite beautiful. There is an inscription on the top which reads,"Er Serchog Cof Am," which I believe is Welch and means In Loving Memory Of. The remainder of the marker also appears to be in Welch and lists several members of the Roberts family who passed anywhere from 1900 to 1914. There are two things I'm trying to find out. The first is where this grave marker may be and the second is a word I cannot identify. Below the first listed name, Richard Roberts, are listed two words; Shop and Nebo. I'm guessing Nebo is a town but I cannot find any meaning to the word Shop. I'm hoping it's a clue. I'm enjoying learning a few Welch words though I wouldn't attempt pronouncing. Some are obvious to English but my favorite so far is Tachwedd meaning November. Never would have guessed.
Thank you,
Bill OD

Ancestry tree problem, help needed please

lundi 18 janvier 2016

I have been trying to contact an ancestry tree owner with whom I have corresponded before. We have a long deceased relatives in common but for some reason he has chosen not to reply.

I thought that maybe I should put a tree up containing my relative, his first wife, their two daughters plus the husband and child of the youngest daughter. Hopefully someone else might find my relative and contact me.

I have uploaded the tree twice now and taken it down again because I cannot fathom out how to work it.

When I click on the name of the tree, I am told I have to add another person but I don't want to. The six people in the tree are all I want to be in there. I've tried adding a deceased person called Ayen Other which was accepted but there's no connection between this person and the six in my tree so that was no help. Then I was to make a "home person" which they want to be me. I don't want this so I chose the option of choosing someone from the tree. However, when I enter my relative's surname, there's nobody in the list. The only person in my online tree is the invented Ayen Other.

What on earth have I done wrong?

What's Georgiana's middle name - can anyone read it please?

I have finally found my 4x great grandmother after her 1st husband's death. Sadly in Poor Law Removal and Settlement Papers. She remarried and had further children, 2 of whom I have found in Ancestry's LMA records but I can find no record of the child named in the 1834 document (who was therefore born in November/December 1833). I can read the first name, Georgiana, but what does the second part say? ??Manis??

Can anyone help me please? (I hope that I have attached it correctly)

Thanks

Is a Clear Layout of a Full Family Tree Possible?

I have been looking at a large selection of family tree display layouts and they all appear to have one thing in common, at best they are quite confusing to read and at worst, they are impossible to make sense of.
Is there a layout which displays the whole family in a clear and concise manner?
I am not looking for an actual software package but just the layout for the final family tree.
I have managed to create a clear layout for a single person's descendants, ascendants, siblings and siblings ascendants but being able to include the rest of the tree just confuses the issue.
I may be seeking the Holy Grail here but I would welcome your opinions.

Family search

When I first started doing the hobby of family history, on Family Search it was possible to enter parents names and possibly a bit more detail and up would come a list of possible children of the named parents!

Does anyone know if this is still possible and if so, how do I do it?

In the above image, on the left hand side, 2nd from bottom is the baptism of Virginia Turner in Madras, India. Can anyone make out the two words entered after.....Mary Ann his wife. I think they may refer to Mary Ann's ethnicity. Their other daughter, who married when she was 15 was described as "East Indian".

Thanks

PS have now found Virginia's marriage where she is described as Indo Briton, which this could be. Does that mean the mother as well as the children were from mixed marriages?

Mary Jane Peacock

jeudi 14 janvier 2016

Hi everyone,

2016 as only just begun and I have just received a belated application from my Great(2) Grandmother. She wishes to get herself onto my family tree.
But before I can even consider her application - I need to get more confirmation, on some of the details she left me, before she departed in the 1800's.

She maintains that she was born between 1828-1838 in either Witton Park or Middlesbrough in England.

She is also adamant, that she married a guy called Patrick Hanlon around 1861 and they had 7 children together!

Although she had had a lot to drink at the time, she can remember celebrating her 57th. birthday - but in October of that year everything goes blank and I think they buried me in Middlesbough.

My parents, who incidently were not present at my burial, I think were called Michael and Mary Ann, but I am no longer sure, as it was such a long time ago.

Dear members of the forum: If you can figure this all out and feel that you can provide additional information to get Mary Jane onto "Brian's Tree" - please post your findings on this website!!!!!!!!!!

Best wishes to you all in 2016.

I am decoding a Gedcom to extract the individuals and relationships.
I have the format worked out but there are a few oddities in certain records.
Some of the individual records have 2, Level 2 RIN numbers.
Is this be because they have 2 spouses even though, in most cases, there is only 1 listed?

I hope you don't have confusing relationships like this

at 52, Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman married 18-year-old Mandy Smith but divorced after a year. Bill’s 30-year-old son Stephen married Mandy’s mother, age 46.

If Bill and Mandy had remained married, Stephen would have been his father’s father-in-law and his own step grandfather in law.

How would you put something like this in your tree :-)

Query regarding surname

Hello'

I would be grateful for some advice concerning 3 letters which seem to connect a surname.

Christopher Moore ats Rowland, the son of John Moore ats Rowland, was baptised at North Tawton, Devon on 30th September 1694.

Christopher Moore ats Rowland married Jane Jerrett at North Tawton on 24th July 1720.

Their daughter Elizabeth Moore ats Rowland appears to have been baptised twice at North Tawton; initially on 29th August 1721 then again on 4th March 1723.

I am a little confused as to what ats, if I've read it correctly, means. Also as to why Elizabeth was christened twice at the same church.

Any help would be much appreciated

Kind regards.

Help to track down what happened to George Dillon

I've been trying for some time to track down more information on the George Dillon in the 1851 census (HO107, Piece: 2230, Folio: 395, Page: 68). The Robert Dillon on the census died in 1860 and his son William had died the year beforehand and Robert's Widow appears on the 1861 census with her daughter. George's age has been transcribed as 17 but it appears to be 47 not 17 (although I searched with both ages to be safe).

I've looked for him both before and after in censuses and all records on FMP but with no luck; I tried surname variants and searched across the whole country.

I have had help on the Rootschat forum but I've still have not managed to track George down.
http://ift.tt/1RiHUWu

I believe that George Dillon may be related to "my" Dillons since in 1851 the Ann Dillon who was described as a visitor seems to be the same one (but not certain) that appears later on the 1861 census with "my" Dillons. http://ift.tt/1RiHTle

I've been at a brick wall at about 1800 with my Dillons for a year now since the family originated from Ireland with no original location known. I'm hoping that if I can find some record of George I might be able to see if he is indeed a relative of "my" Dillons and if so whether I might be able to get any useful info.

Could anyone help?

Trying to understand late birth registration. Help please!

I wonder if someone could help me with the following entry (per FreeBMD): NB. the person concerned is not dead so name removed.

Q3 1947 Chelmsford XXX mother XXX, but per FreeBMD: "The above transcription represents what is in the GRO index but it is referred to by the following entry Births 1944 Dec: XXX ,Chelmsford,?,See S'47 which implies that this is a late entry, that is an entry that has been registered in a quarter later than the event"

Does this mean that the birth was registered in Chelmsford in Q3 1947 but the birth itself was actually in Dec 1944?

Does the additional information also mean that the birth actually happened in Chelmsford itself in Dec 1944?

Thanks for any help!

Sarah Dewar / Variety of Last Names

I have found a Sarah Dewar (b. around 1813), d.1906.

Born in Inverness, Scotland, died in Glengarry, Ontario, Canada.

After emigration, her last name went through an evolution, sometimes McLeor, McClure, Doer and Dewar.

She married Donald McDonald.

Even though there is apparently good coverage of the Dewar line in Glengarry, I can't find her parents, though I've tried the variety of last names.

There is even a book on the topic, though I can't find a copy.

"Dewar - Tracing Our Family in Glengarry, Ont."

http://ift.tt/1OXYR1O

It's a lead, I suppose, but I can't do anything with it at the moment.

Sarah Dewar / McClure had a sister, Penelope, also born in Scotland, who also emigrated.

This Penelope married an Andrew Fraser.

Thoughts and advice from those wiser than me is always welcome.

Thanks for the time.
Sarah Dewar / Variety of Last Names

John MacDonald and Ann MacPherson

I just had a pretty nice breakthrough in my research. Some hard work and a little bit of luck.

I have locked things down with John MacDonald and his wife Ann MacPherson, who emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1815.

They were aboard a ship, the Dorothy.

Going by the ages on the passenger lists, John MacDonald was born around 1767/1768 and Ann MacPherson was born around 1775.

They both set up shop and lived out their lives in Ontario, Canada.

They were from Callander, Perth, Scotland. At least that was where they lived with their family before leaving for North America. I don't know for sure if they were born there.

I am seeing a number of trees in Europe going all the way back to the beginning of time, so I wanted to tread carefully and verify any steps that go further up than John and Ann.

Once things hit Scotland and Europe, I don't have much or any evidence. I've seen some marriage dates and parents, but no hard evidence or original documents.

Their kids on the Dorothy were Christian (maybe Christina), Margaret, Thomas, Agnes, Donald and John.

- - -

If anyone can help me lock anything down from Scotland going backwards up the tree, or anything like a baptism or marriage entry in the parish journals, I welcome your help as always and am grateful as always.

This could be an interesting trip up the tree, if I can get a few footholds.

William Foulds b.1826-1877

Having a few issues here.

some of you will have heard of William Foulds who emigrated to Connecticut-USA with his wife Fanny and son William.

I have William & Fanny's marriage cert but I'm blowed if I can find William on the 1841 smegging census! [I have him on 1851 in Allestree, Derby, England] then in 1860/1870 in USA census.

What I am looking to achieve is to find William in the 1841 and also look to see if he had any siblings and who his parents were. from records I have him being born in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England. BUT there also appears to be another William Foulds b. 1826 in LOUGHBOROUGH!! [which isn't MY William!] they sure do like to give me the runaround!..lol.

any help would be most appreciated thanks

William married Fanny Jan 1st 1844 gives his father as William a BAKER [and this was also William's occupation]

witness' were Charles Lydall [Fannys brother] and Harriett Hodgekinson [no idea!]

they marry in the parish church in the parish of Ashby de la Zouch after banns. I am looking at the moment to see if I can spot which of the 8 parish churches this would be!.

Anyone researching VECCHIETTI?

vendredi 8 janvier 2016

I'm trying to give my niece some ideas about where she could look for more info about this family. This is probably only of interest to someone who wants to have a look at someone else's puzzle as a break from their own!

So far as can be told, VECCHIETTIs aren't in her tree, but she was trying to work out a noticeable connection. It might turn out simply to be a friend-aunt, kind of thing, but it would tie up some loose ends to track it down.
The principal name is: Margherita Aida Caroline VECCHIETTI, (all her her name's components appear with variants at different times!)
  • b 1892q4 Westminster VECCHIETTI Marguerita A C (there was a twin brother, Umberto Luigi G, whose death was registered 1893q4, aged 1)
  • bap 21 May 1893 Battersea, St Philip. Margarita Ida Carolina, d/o Quinto, restaurant keeper, & Ada VECCHIETTI; 43 Great Windmill St, SW
  • 1901: RG13/85 fo144 p13; 251 Vauxhall Bridge Rd, Victoria: VEECHIETTI Margherita Daughter Single Female 8 1893 - London, Middlesex, England
    • (same address as her mother, but her father is at a different address)

  • 1911: RG14PN1186 RG78PN40 RD13 SD1 ED1 SN165; 10 Craven St, St Martin in the Fields, London: VECCHIETTI Margherita A C Daughter Single Female 18 1893 At Home Piccadilly English.
    • (same address as her mother, but her father is at a different address)

Telephone & other directories and Electoral rolls, track the mother, Ada Ann, and daughter through to
  • ER 1962 #4913 10 Stanwick Rd, W14 VECCHIETTI Margherita A
  • d 1962q1 10 Stanwick Rd, W14 VECCHIETTI Margharita age 69
  • London Gazette : d 16 Jan 1962 10 Stanwick Rd, W Ken, London W14 VECCHIETTI Margherita Aida Caroline Sp Freeborough Slack & Co, 15 Vernon St, W14, Solicitors (Horace William JACKSON)

  • Probate search: Prob 31 May 1962 JACKSON Horace William local government officer Effects £3978 17s 9d

~~~~~~
For her parents, I have:
  • m 1891q4 Westminster. VECCHIETTI Gregorio Quinto N (I have speculated that this might stand for "Nervi") WHEELER Ada Ann (who was in the same household as Quinto in the 1891 census)
Like, Ada and Margarita, Quinto appears in directories and censuses, but I can't find anything about him after these London Gazette entries - which are also reflected in other formal newspaper announcements:
  • 1917 Cr B'rptcy Windsor Ho, 311 Vauxhall Bridge Rd VECCHIETTI Quinto Hotel & Lodging-House Keeper 7 Jun #281 / 2 Jul 123
  • 1917 Cr B'rptcy Windsor Ho, 311 Vauxhall Bridge Rd VECCHIETTI Quinto Hotel & Lodging-House Keeper 1st & Final: 20s/£ + 4% int (Which is impressive, I thought!)
The London Gazette records Ada resuming British nationality:
  • 20-Mar-39 readmitted to British Nationality: VECCHIETTE Ada Ann. Italy. guest house keeper 167 Gloucester Terr, W 2
And her death is registered:
  • d 1954q2 Fulham VECCHIETTI Ada A age 88
If anyone happens to spot something relevant, I'd be interested, for my own satisfaction, to know what happened to Quinto after 1917.
~~~~~~
Horace William JACKSON is the family connection for my niece, but we haven't managed to suss out why Horace's daughter would have called Margarita "Auntie Rita". In that era, that could easily be just a courtesy for someone who was too close to be called "Miss Vecchietti", of course. She was close enough for Horace to be her executor.

I spotted that the elcetoral rolls will be worth checking - if something of a slog. They record other name at the same address and, since the family were into hotels, apartments, guest/boarding-houses, and taking in lodgers, others at the same address are listed, and could give a clue.

We aren't chasing info specifically about Horace - quite a lot has been found for him, including his service records and the ICRC WW1 PoW records. But to save people chasing info we already have - or in case it triggers an idea for someone...

Ancestry Electoral registers ?

jeudi 7 janvier 2016

When I search Ancestry London, England, Electoral Registers 1832-1965 For Violet R Felgate I find her on this page
http://ift.tt/22NFT8I
Which indicates she is with her husband Stanley at 41 Forest Road Walthamstow in 1965.
Unfortunately when I click on the 'VIEW' link it takes me to a page that only shows the even numbers of Forest Road.
I have tried going through several pages either side with no success.
Is there a way in which to find the odd numbers ?

Thank You to those who maintain the Reference Library...

I am trying to help my niece a bit, as she follows up some loose ends. Amongst the info was the fact that Horace William JACKSON (1898-1982) had served in WW1 and was a PoW. I suddenly remembered the Red Cross records that are online, but couldn't remember how to find the link - so I searched the FTF Reference Library and found what I was looking for. I called up the link and searched the ICRC database, and found the target name - and followed the link through to the images of the German PoW data. :)

This FTF site really has great resources!

Two Omer Butterfield's on same page of 1880 US Census? Any ides?

mercredi 6 janvier 2016

Hi folks. I haven't been around for a while, but I know where to come when I need some help. ;D

I've found an anomaly on the 1880 US Federal Census, Maine>Aroostook>Weston>217. I'm researching the family of Omer Dudley Butterfield, b 24 Apr 1880 in Maine, parents unknown. Ancestry pointed me to this census page where I note on line 14 a very possible candidate for my Omer although this one is an Omer E rather than D. The thing is, on line 10 above him is an Omer Butterfield, five years older, with another family, noted as adopted.

Add to that, the older Omer is with family Smith, and above family Smith is family Scanlin with Cordelia Smith, step dau, with them rather than the Smiths. I've no interest in the other families, but am trying to understand what the scoop is with Omer.

Any ideas what is going on here?

Marriage Date Stephen Oswin

I've come up the dreaded brick wall in my search for an answer to the above.

Stephen Oswin was born in Coventry 1799/1800 and was baptized on 25 Jan 1800. His father was Charles Oswin & his mother Sarah Thorneloe. His first child, Elizabeth Oswin, was born in 1829.I can find no reference to the date of his marriage, his wife's name is Sophia, unfortunately I have no surname, and she appears on the census returns for 1841 & 1851. Stephen is listed on the 1871 census as a widower so Sophia died sometime between 1851 & 1871; I have no census for 1861.

Any help would be appreciated.

Family Tree Maker 2010 for Mac

Hi

Just trying to find something on this version. I wondered if you could search for births on a specific date. I have a new grandchild due on 18th Jan and wondered if there had any previous births on this day, so thought to search but can't find out how to.

Can anyone help?

Are people still using FTM, if not what would you advise I use when I pick up my family tree again.

Thank You

Correct Dyer Coat of Arms?

I have been hoping to find the right coat of arms for a branch of Dyers.

One of them this forum helped me with in this thread:

http://ift.tt/1kHBrG1

They were in Gloucester, England going back to 1797 and presumably before.

But I can't say for sure that there isn't Irish heritage.

I've found a couple Western European coats of arms for Dyer, and I can't even make an educated guess which one is correct.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Well...the things you find out

Just doing some research on my Dad's sister's husband who was the son/grandson of the music hall star Kate Carney. Was a big family mystery who actually was his Mother.

Looking on 1911 census and saw the address of where they lived 221 Brixton Hill....and it's only my dentist that I used when I lived in Brixton, been in there loads of times.

What a coincidence. I love this hobby

USA marriage - Bruno Langlois & Angelique Charland

Hello the forum

I have a GENEALOGY CHALLENGE for you! To date, the marriage remains an enigma. It seems to have occurred in the USA, but nobody seems to have found proof.

It's said that Bruno Langlois was baptized under the name of Charles, maybe in USA. He claims to be born March 21, 1825 at the 1901 census.

Old post on the same subject: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.co...-04/1208693521

So If you ever have a record of marriage, thank you to let me know.

Reformatory School London

Hello All,

I'm back here after recovering from my last all-consuming employment - it's been a long while. Hey ho back on the hunt and this is so much more fun :)
I've discovered a relative on the 1871 census as an inmate at a reformatory school in Lambeth. This school does not seem to have a particular name but is located at Manor Hall at 78 Lower Kennington Lane and the "Head" Superintendent is Jane M Macartney born around 1815.

I've tried to find this "home" on Peter Higginbotham's site but without luck. So then I tracked Jane Macartney back to 1861 when she is working at a home for 'fallen women' sponsored by Charles Dickens.

I am trying to find out why my relation was at the home in 1871..

Glad to be back

Library HMS Téméraire - Battle of Trafalgar HELP PLEASE!

Hello:

I am seeking help please, with a piece of research.

I am researching ROBERT SANDS,( b1787/1788 ) from St Margaret's, Rochester in Kent. In 1803 he joined the crew of the HMS Temeraire. He was 15 years old, had the rank of " boy, third class" and I think was a powder monkey. ( Although he does seem older than other " monkeys ".) He took part in the Battle Trafalgar and recently, notes surfaced from him recording the battle which were auctioned at Bonham's and purchased by Medway Council in Kent. The council don't have any further details on Robert Sands, except that in 1803 he was briefly apprenticed to Matthias Lock of the Chatham Company of Dredgers.

My research has come to a halt. I have seen a record of him onboard the Temeraire in 1805 but after that date, I have nothing. As his record is very important I would like to find more about this man.

St Margaret's is now part of Rochester. In his days it was a small village area outside Rochester.
The date of birth is from Medway Council, as is the address.
I have written to Bonham's, to see if they can put me in touch with the people who placed the papers for auction. I understand these are direct relations and living outside the United Kingdom.

I would be grateful for any assistance or pointing in the correct direction.

Thank you, kind regards

1911 Census - getting confused over the references

Please can somebody explain to me (and I'm sure it is simple but I'm not getting it right) which number when you are looking on ancestry at the 1911 census but haven't yet opened the document to view which number is the schedule number? Reason for asking is I'm trying to add relations to the Lost Cousins site from the 1911 census but when I then click on the arrow to check I've entered them correctly I plainly haven't has totally strange families appear on FMP.
